That was just poor marketing stemming from someone thinking the name needed to be explained. Gene McMurray gave the sports teams the nickname "Buccaneers" in 1935, and it stuck.

Bucky fired off a cannon at soccer games when I was a student, so they have it lying around to use for football. That would make complete sense (and be awesome).

The one soccer uses is a makeshift thing, not a real cannon and supposedly a pain in the butt to fire. The talk I heard is a real one and less complicated to fire.

Going back through our recent discussions this morning.

In an off-season full of promise, football returning, WBB thriving, one MBB monster player after another signing AND some serious talent remaining on the roster, instead of basking in the glory of where we are headed as a community, we spin our wheels for a week whining about colors, regionality of the name, and one even threatened to not come to games because of the name.

And this is pretty big honor, considering back in late March folks were asking for a near-70 year old head coach with zero D1 experience.

Congratulations, "ETSU Bears???", you're officially the worst of the bad.
