This only makes sense. Bowen, not Pastner, would be in charge of denying the transfer. I would wager there is A LOT going on behind the scenes and that Bowen has a reason for doing what he's doing.

Best conspiracy theory: Bowen and Mr. Nichols are in on this together. Mr. Nichols puts on a public show of being upset that Memphis is denying the transfer. Bowen encourages it because he realizes this makes it easy for him to cut Pastner loose. A new coach is lined up. Would be brilliant.

I would love to have a guy that ruthless running my programs, but that's a real stretch.

Now, Austin owes it to Josh to actually meet with him, which he has not done. But once he does that, can't deny him a transfer.

I do think it is pretty **** to transfer this late, but it is what it is.

So, who do we have coming back? How is our backcourt? Do we have a chance to compete? We have been recruiting top 100 players, we should be fine.

Very, very strange. I mean, realllyyyy???? First off, how does a school NOT release a kid who wants to transfer? You can't hold him. Second, it sounds like daddy has been drinking the Kool-Aid and thinks the grass is greener beyond the hilltop, and that the NBA is inches away. It's not. Austin made great strides last year, but he is nowhere near NBA-ready. Time will tell.......but very, very disappointing.

Wonder if cal is involved.

I concur, but if the reason is legit, I'm not going to kick Nichols.

It's always good to err on the side of defending the 18-22 year old instead of the paid professional coach. It's Pastner's job to hold it together. Connecting with young men who are going to be less mature, even if only by virtue of young age and lack of experience, is a big part of being a college basketball coach.

This is exactly why i'm done with pastner. He is a super great person, but i'm tired of all the drama and the excuses.

I just don't get why pastner is here another year. From what everyone is saying, he will have a bad year and then be canned or he will have a good year and then move on somewhere else. Why would we allow that to happen?

What would make a guy that gets as many minutes as he wants and is probably the most popular player on the team want to leave? Other than serious under tow. Something is rotting at the core.

This is a nightmare.

This late in the offseason is weird. Something had to happen.
Does anybody know if Shaq has graduated? I would be worried about him now. Austin and him were real tight.

Yup. I agree. It's a very strange situation.....

Pastner won't be fired because AN wants out. Get over that. Wouldn't look good and set a bad precedent. If Tigers struggle early, there should be a very short leash.
