Rumor Mill from Facebook Group: DoJ Interested in our Situation
I know some of you here have seen the post in "Save UAB Football" by Squig (and put your thumbs-up on it).

Any thoughts?

Squig has been as close to 100% as it gets. The DOJ could murder them, if they want to dig.

I have heard rumblings of what sounds like two different investigations and a lawsuit... but saying a couple of people have commented on hearing rumors is close to all I know. It could break the grip of the BoT, force changes. It could also blow up in our faces. Investigations tend to go where they go and often in unexpected directions.

If so I'd imagine in the DOJ eyes it's "we possibly see some smoke & where there's smoke there's normally a fire to put out" so are checking to see the cause of the smoke

I would not be in the least surprised to find out that there have been games played with cash flow. We know that the BoT is corrupt in how contracts are awarded and that there is room for padding and kickbacks in the bids. There are a lot of Federal programs and dollars involved with universities.

Might get interesting. Might get good. Might get unpleasant.

The obvious unfortunate side-effect of a DoJ investigation that uncovers massive UA System administrative fraud is that UAB's federal funding for research could become a legitimate target to be witheld. Would anybody be shocked if trustees (or a UAB president) is/was funneling UAB federal research dollars into their friends' pockets and getting kickbacks? The way the state of Alabama fixes this is to fully cooperate with the feds, break-up the UA System, and overhaul governance of all the universities. But knowing the state government they'd fight it and let UAB become a graveyard of forgotten research money while standing up against federal tyranny and the honor of the "Capstone".

I'm more worried that something happens that causes the NIH to cut off the grants for a year or three, whether it was the BoT, Watts, or something that went on at UAB that causes it. That would hurt the pass through money to UAT, but it would also hit UAB's revenues, reputation, and we might lose researchers behind it.

This kind of thing could be very good for us, in terms of the BoT, but it could also be very ugly and costly.

It's all speculation at this point, but I'm going to be watching the news, you betcha.

Do these rumors say what branch of the DOJ is involved. There is no "DOJ" that investigates. It would be a specific department. Usually a lawsuit means the local US Attorneys Office. If that's the case, it should be pointed out that the current US attorney in Birmingham received his Law degree from Alabama.

While it's not nothing, the only thing that a federal case will do is get the current folks out of office and possibly in jail. Someone insinuated above that it would force restructuring, but the DOJ doesn't have that power. The structure itself isn't illegal, the abuse of it is.

That would be a huge step forward, as long as they aren't replaced with the same type of crooks.

This article may shed some light on who we could see on the prosecution side:

The Feds are not going to say much. I think that the rumors started with people who had been interviewed or had some sort of direct knowledge... but at this point it's all rumors. When it hits the news we'll know.

I'll chalk it up to social media wishing before I get my hopes up too much.
