I'm with the folks who are chalking this up to wishful thinking. Heaven knows how some rumors get started. However, if you ever played the game rumors as a child where a statement is passed from one person to another through a long line of folks and then you hear how the statement is mangled when it comes out the other end, then you can understand some of the mechanics involved.

That isn't quite right. If there is a large scale investigation, it could very well be conducted out of the attorney general's office in DC and not local US atty office. Happens regurlarly. For instance, the civil rights division of DOJ conducts investigations around the country.
