Estwick: Jerod Haase wants Alabama, big schools on schedule but they must travel too
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2015/...a_big.html

Quote:Coach Jerod Haase wants to play Alabama, a team the Blazers have faced once in school history – in 1993.

This game and others are part of Haase's plan to earn an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament while entertaining his Blazers fan base with opponents from major conferences.

Now that's what I'm talking about. 2 for 1s maybe 3 for 1s should be out of the question moving forward.

Not even 2 for 1 with schools like Alabama. It should be straight up deals. I get 2 for 1s or 1 and done deals with programs like Duke and UNC with significant basketball pedigree.

Tell them H&H or eat cake. First game in Birmingham or go jump in the Warrior River.

I would be cool playing Bama one time at the Legacy Arena. I just have this fear there would be a hoard of Bama fans at Bartow Arena turning it into a Tide home game.

I don't think Haase was exaggerating when he said 48-for-1 in the context of Alabama.

Because of the relatively open NCAA Basketball Tournament each March, non P5 teams can take a more relaxed attitude towards playing particular schools. UAB does not NEED to play Bama or any other school as long as it can win over enough good RPI teams to make the tournament.

This does not apply to the football playoff which is limited to the dozen or so wealthiest programs in America. Football has crowned 15 NCs since 2000, and of the 32 teams to play for it, only a relative few of the 120 D1 teams have been in ANY those 15 games.

To keep that from happening, make requirements to acquire the ticket before game week. Maybe, included in season tickets only. Then say you can now purchase this game ticket with proof you've been to one of the previous home games. Dont put the UAT-UAB tickets on sale til after the previous game

I bet they wanted a better deal than Auburn which caused the 47 to 1 comment.

Ha ha I suspect they said Hell No to any game or gave a ridiculous condition they knew we would laugh at.

Their basketball team could be 5 guys they picked from outside and they still would never take a deal that wasn't at least equal to what Auburn got.

I'd give it to them too. We have two schools in state that would be well attended games. I'm not scared of either one of those teams on their home floors right now. Anything short of this deal is simply ridiculous, but I feel it's a fine deal, so long as we keep the gate in bham.

Again I can see North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, and/ or Syracuse maybe a few others 2 for 1 makes financial sense but for the local schools within 4 hrs drive of town 1 for 1 should be the preference.

Sure a home and home is desired, but a 2-1-1 is not the end of the world when it's two games here and two games there. I'd take that deal all day for a chance to beat the piss outta Bama.

Have we always given Troy a home and home? What about. Alabama A&M? There is a pecking order in college sports, and CUSA is in the middle of it.

Keep in mind I'm talking about schools that don't want to come to Bartow Arena. Alabama A&M, Troy, JSU, Alabama State, and South Alabama are not in that category because of their willingness to play on our floor.

Well, it is nice to know that the quality of writing will stay consistent even with Estwick.

Quote:This games are part of Haase's plan to elevate the quality UAB's schedule and earn an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

Quote:Haasa, however, also wants to filling Bartow Arena

Quote:If it's up to Haase, the Blazers won't wait until the 2016 C-USA tournament in to seal a postseason berth.

It was not pure coincidence that it took a state legislative action to force Bama to play Auburn. If you read the Bama fan comments from that period, you will see the same content in comments you see today about playing UAB. Many members of their influential fan base still think they are better than ANYONE within Alabama. That has not changed since 1948.

Yes, every men's basketball contract we have had with Troy has been a home and home.

• 2008 (A) & 2008 (H)
• 2009 (H) & 2010 (A)
• 2011 (H) & 2012 (A)
• 2013 (H) & 2015 (A)

We have never played on the road at Alabama A&M or Samford, but have at Alabama State, Jacksonville State and South Alabama.
