LA coverage related: Local LA sports talk show Petros and Money gives us a fair amount of love considering they don't broadcast nationally. They've done a few segments on UAB Football/ Fire Ray Watts, and they've read some of my tweets and emails about it on the air. December 2nd or 3rd, they did a few segments with Patrick Claybon, who played football for Troy and knows some people involved with UAB Football.

Petros Papadakis, one of the hosts and a college football analyst for Fox Sports, has a running joke about Birmingham being his adopted third home because he spent two days here covering the UAB vs. Rice game McGee's 2nd year. He bought UAB shirts for the whole crew of their radio show.

They proclaimed Ray Watts to be the worst president in the history of UAB.

"Worst President?" That would imply there was a competition and he finished last. My feeling is that he is the ONLY "BAD President".

In terms of athletics, here is how I would rate. UAB presidents

1. Hill - started athletics
2. McCallum - worked with Bartow to bring football
3. Garrison - fought to save football
4. Reynolds
5. Bennett
6. Volker - I recently came across an old newspaper article which said UAB didn't have college athletics when he was president because he didn't want UAB to have athletics (note: he's higher on the list in other categories
7. Watts: killed football

This may explain the sharp decline in my computer's speed. It's still trying to compute the concept of Attalla and MB agreeing.

In defense of Dr Volker (if he needs my defense) you must remember that "his UAB" was that original "commuter school" with only two buildings - Tidwell Hall and Cudworth Hall. UAB had several costly priorities that had to be met before considering athletics. First among them was building the present UAB campus along now University Avenue. All of those UAB buildings we see now existed only in his vision for UAB when he was President.

The UAB of Dr. Dick Hill existed for him to be able to begin the athletic program because of the base Volker provided for him.

Could he have come back instead of Dr Watts, we would probably have a better athletic program than most in C-USA.
