Direct rip off of this year's #1 song
Watched Sunday Morning today. They aired a story on a producer, writer, musician named Mark Ronson. He and Bruno Mars supposedly came up with the top tune this year titled Uptown Funk.

When they played the video (I had not ever heard the song before) I immediately said it sounds like Jungle Love by Morris Day and the Time, and that CBS dropped the ball by not vetting the story fully.

Well as it turns out it is a direct rip off of several different works by 4 different artists. The sad part is Ronson acts the song was original.

This YouTube video will be enlightening. The youtube video will sync two songs together playing at the same time. But it is worth taking a view.

I think less of a rip off and more of an homage.

Without looking at the link, I can tell you the first time I heard that song, I thought it may have been an old Time song. Then listening to it more I heard some Sly and the Family Stone and Atomic Dog in it. But most def it had "Jungle Love" written all over it.

Frankly, I love the song and think it's a great song to "reeducate" the youngin's about 70's and 80's funk/r&b. The old hey you like "Uptown Funk" here listen to "The Bird" or watch Purple Rain.

It was bought to my attention today that the song in question was recorded at a studio here in Memphis. The source was a magazine in a doctor's office. It was a Memphis publication.

Ronson is nearly as famous as Mars, btw.

The first time I heard Uptown Funk, I immediately thought of Morris Day and Jungle Love. It's VERY close.

That being said, that song is significantly better than most other mainstream crap today. Bruno Mars is pretty dang good at what he does. And the fact that it was recorded in Memphis does help.

When I first heard it, I thought it was Homage, not necessarily a rip off. Sometimes, there is just a certain way to do things musically. There is a way to play funk, write funk, that is somewhat formulaic, so sometimes things and elements will repeat, but I wouldn't call it a rip off like the YouTube video does. It's a hot track, no doubt, but it is hot for what it pays homage to, not because of its creativity and uniqueness.

Well then listen to Ronson's interview. He said it was all original. And he is correct. It was original, once upon a time. But they aren't the first, and they won't be the last.
