Gary Estwick (@GaryReports) hired by Alabama Media Group to cover UAB.

It was mentioned to me this weekend that the NEWS had terminated all of their editors. That does not come as a surprise to some who have commented on the quality of writing that got put out in the paper or on AL.com in the recent past. Will our new writer be expected to learn his craft on his own like the last one?

They had editors? Or are you referring to when they went to three days a week?

They did fire most of their editors when they essentially turned into a blog instead of a newspaper.

UAB football wouldn't be back without AL.com. I know that's hard for some of y'all to swallow. Estwick is actually a veteran reporter. This is a good hire.

I skimmed his tweets from the past several months... he's no Nick Birdsong.

Smile guys, that's a good thing.

Gary did a great job covering the New Orleans Saints, so he has some practice typing the name Mark Ingram.

A media guru told me t was a good hire FWIW.

Drew and Irvine never really pissed me off. They may have written something I don't agree with but I was never pissed. Now Torraine the terrible.................

Adam Rubin was the best beat writer to ever cover UAB.

both games he covered was outstanding

Adam was more worried about NASCAR than UAB. I see Wayne Martin from time to time. Loved his writing. He was the best IMHO.

If he gets paid to write, he should have learned to edit a long time ago, if nothing else for pride in his work. The quote above indicates that for now, he's terrible.

Nothing I read on al.com lately looks like it came within a mile of a proofreader. I'll try to focus on the content.

That quote from the new writer looks like it was translated from a Russian malware programmer.
