The Mets had no first round pick, so I'd expect them to be aggressive... and they took at least 3 clear signability picks in the first 10 rounds that should come cheap.

Mets have the lowest pool of money to work with ... 1/5 of what the Astros have. They have very little flexibility to be aggressive.

We're probably safe.

Why do you say this?
20th round is pretty late for a guy out of high school to get drafted in and still decide to go to the league. Signing bonus $$ won't be that big.

That's true of any high schooler drafted after the 10th round. Rendon was an exception (with regards to signing bonus offered), but that was before the new slot system was put into effect. Rendon also auditioned for the Braves that Summer, and did very well.

Good point, hope that works in our favor and the other picks eat up that bonus pool.

RE: MLB draft
I can remember when Rice commits were supposed to be difficult-to-sign draft prospects, and teams shied away. Didn't we lose a commitment that was like a 9th round draft choice (Stone Garrett, maybe?) last year. If we are at risk of losing kids drafted in the 20th round, that would be a very bad sign of how the market of HS kids perceives the program.

The Mets are not the Yankees; they're ulta-stingy with their money and budget. Shocked if Simon doesn't matriculate. I also think if McCanna had been drafted by anyone other than the Astros or Rangers he probably would have returned. Keeping my fingers crossed on Orewiler-- this was his first year of quality action. If he can build on this year's success he could improve his draft position to the Top 7 8 rounds, IMO. Blake not getting drafted in puzzling as a lefty. I know he had his heart set on moving on, but I wonder if he'll reconsider now. Could be a real unexpected coupe to get him back next year.

The round drafted doesn't really matter anymore, after the first couple rounds. It's all about available pool money. Many of the picks in Rounds 11-15 today were higher ranked players than the players drafted in Rounds 7-10 yesterday. The reason? Picks through Round 10 tie into the bonus pool. Get some easy signs, like seniors to agree to underslot deals and use the leftover savings to try to steal some kids later.

Still 10 rounds to go, but I'm also surprised that neither Stainback or Taylor have been drafted yet, given their strong showings at the plate this year.

Kirby has already begun his career in investment banking. In addition to being drafted, THIS is what a Rice degree can do for a student athlete!

Yup, he got a couple great offers. Very impressive. BTW, having spoken personally with Kirby on several occasions, he never had aspirations to go pro. He came to Rice from JUCO to play for an elite college program and get his degree from an elite institution.

So does anyone have any enlightened ideas concerning which players will stay and which HS players will join us? When is the last day for signing?

Anyone who has bad things to say about Wayne Graham after all he has done, and is doing for this program, needs to take a hike. I notice with all of our players being drafted that no one is talking about the quality of our recruits anymore?

I believe that even the harshest critics have fallen in line thinking this and last year's recruits are believed to be quite the haul. I think there are some disagreement as to the team's on field talent differential with its opponents the last couple of years.

To have players drafted they have to be eligible for the draft. It varies from year to year. Tools matter quite a bit to scouts., actual results don't count as much as you think. It is a bit like the stock market. You can love a kid, but want him at a bargain price, so you hold your breath and draft him as late as you dare. So, players drafted probably isn't the best judge of a collegiate career. For example, Ford Stainback was a wonderful college player but was not drafted. I would rather have Ford at the plate than any of the players who were drafted this year.

My apologies if your comment was not directed at me and those like me, but I wanted another chance to try to carve out some distinction.

I've been away from the message board for a few days, but have been thinking a lot about the baseball program and how I'd love things to play out coaching-wise. Since Interwebowl touches on issues I am interested in, I thought I would piggy-back onto his comment.

First, let me say I consider myself a hard-core, loyal Owl fan. I know many of you on the board, and can state I've been a Football and Basketball season ticket holder since 1990, a Baseball season ticket holder since 2000, and a Volleyball season ticket holder since 2011. I've attended just about all home games, and have followed the Owls around the country on numerous Road Trips. As my friends can attest, no matter what sport we're talking about, I'm usually the loudest one in our section cheering for Rice. So, I challenge anyone to accuse me of not being a loyal Rice fan.

The one thing I think everybody agrees with is that Wayne has probably been the greatest coach ever at Rice (maybe with some argument from the older, Jess Neely generation of fans). Wayne has earned the right to coach as long as he wants - we could never repay what he has done for Rice sports. That I totally agree with.

So here we go.......Having said that, my hope is that Wayne is starting to consider when he plans to retire. My hope for the program is that he's maybe 1 to 2 years from turning things over to our next generation of coaches. If that's what he is thinking, I think everybody would be excited to start planning Wayne Graham celebrations, we would start commissioning the building of his statue in front of the stadium, and for the rest of his life Wayne would get standing ovations every time he entered, Reckling, Tudor, etc.

What's makes me a bit nervous is when I hear rumors (unsubstantiated) that Wayne is thinking about coaching as long as he is physically able - maybe into his 90's. Maybe Wayne's not thinking that way - I'm not sure. If true, my opinion is that going in that direction is not what is best for the program. Obviously it's Wayne's decision - because he has earned the right to coach as long as he wants. And, although not at the level we were at several years ago, Rice baseball is still a top 25 program. Still, count me as one of those who hopes it does not play out that way. I want him to go out as everybody's hero - when he's still on top. I think with every passing year it gets harder and harder to do that. As a result, I hope Wayne is at least starting to give thought about when he wants his coaching reign to come to an end.

I'm kind of curious to know what he's thinking.
