Funmi Jimoh
On Thursday in Rome, Funmi Jimoh had her best jump of the year, 6.72 meters (22' 0½"), to move her up to #16 in the world. It was a tough competition, because that mark was only good for 5th place. She's now back in Houston to train for the USATF National Championships (top 3 in each event qualify for the World Championships - if they've met the "A" standard).

For women's long jump, the "A" standard is 6.70 meters (21' 11¾").

Rule of thumb: as a practical matter, I believe that big countries like the US almost always have more people who meet the A standard than the country is allowed to send -- hence, the trials are key means for selecting the country's Olympic representatives. But for small countries, getting their athletes to meet the standard is crucial.
