We have both Boston College and UConn this year.
We have a 10 year series scheduled with Army starting next year.
Also next year Rutgers and Temple, for 2019 and 2020 UConn and for 2021 and 2022 Boston College. Also have an eight year deal with Liberty, which is mid-Atlantic.

Here is FBS Schedule view.

PS. Screw Buffalo, they lead the charge for the ultimatum as they were afraid that we wold pass them by and other MAC teams joined in. It did not help that we were terrible, but could have easily negotiated for a less than even share and brought James Madison in. Short version is that they did not want to be a stepping stone and wanted us all in.
That is a great looking schedule. Lots of major northeast schools. You're almost to the point you'd have trouble fitting conference games in if anyone came knocking.

Other northeastern/mid-atlantic games I'd like to see:

Army-BC

Army/Navy-Rutgers
Navy-Pitt
Navy-UMD
Navy-UVA
UVA-UMD (two games scheduled)
UMD-WVU (a few games scheduled)
WVU-Penn State (two games scheduled)
Penn State-Pitt (should be yearly)

Unfortunately, Navy's schedule is extremely limited these days.

I would love to have WVU on the schedule again. But i doubt they would want to play us right now, Unless we threw in a men's or women's basketball series to sweeten the deal. Even then, its unlikely...

RE: UMass Football
Umass Football is circling the toilet (AGAIN). 1-3 out of the gate. with 3 of the 4 being winnable games.

It is time for our AD to do the right thing and let our Head Coach go. Whipple was a really solid HC for them back in the day (late 90's), but he is just in over his head now. He is stubborn to a fault about not having an Offensive Coordinator (he insists that he can do that job) and his ineptness shows every week on the field.

Our AD - Ryan Bamford - has been housecleaning for the last 2 years including Men's and Women's Hoops, and Hockey as well as a few other lower profile coaches. So far his choices have been solid to good - frankly a little more time is needed to claim any better than that; however, all three of those programs are now on significantly better footing. Now it's time to add football to that list. We have sub-par facilities, sub-par coaching and sub-par play on the field. We cannot build a fan base because nobody wants to watch this schidt-show in the first place.

If Whip lasts more than 1 week after the final game of this season, what is left of an already dwindling hardcore fan base will crumble to nothing. Whip must go!

Maybe Ryan Bamford can have a discussion with the UMass president, and set something up where Whip is like his personal advisor or something. Then Bamford can go out and hire a new coach.

There are signs that Whipp and Pinkham have lost the locker room, something the administration pays close attention.
**** is hitting the fan and has affected this fan.

We'll see if things change, but neither coaches are spring chickens.

AD Ryan Bamford is very good and took months and months but Whip only got a one year extension. Enough to get his 10yr requirement for a state pension.

Things could not be worse for UMass. They looked good playing Charlotte, but defense never got off the plane for Ohio. Perhaps the "real" news was the story hitting Yahoo, SI, ESPN, and the front page of the Boston Herald.

Wendy Murphy missed on that one.

Whip’s offensive game plan actually shows the disconnect.

We have a game against South Florida Saturday, so posted this in a thread on the AAC board.

When you go independent, you get to chose, which referees will do your games. Some of the MAC refs did not take it very well that we/UMass selected AAC refs. One ref in particular, called some really questionable calls on us and let some bad ones go on Ohio. Especially noting the penalty, where he picked up the flag. Also at one point the ref ignored Whip, who had to come out on the edge of the field to finally be granted a time out. Refs know the game and when a penalty really can change the flow. They are not idiots for sure, but in general really good people trying to do a good job.

Lets just say eventhou officially there was no bad blood created when we did not accept the MAC All Sports invite, there will always be some.

Hesitated to say this, but there is a growing group that want a coaching change. The AD gave Coach Whip a one year extensions last January. Infer what you may.

My glass half full view, the players will come out in support for Whip. Expect a closer game than you'd think against USF.

Here is an article on how the decision on the 6 day suspension was reached and some other info.

Whipple's buyout is scheduled to drop by $200K on 12/1 but ideally the university and athletic department can come to an agreement with Whipple on getting something done ASAP#FightMassachusetts added,

There are some interesting names out there for #UMass to look at, but I'm going to shut down two names right off the bat who won't be coming to Amherst. Chris Klieman and Mike Houston.

I wish we still had 10 team conferences so the following would be a viable Big East Conference (no particular order). I know most of these schools were charter or late add members of the old Big East, but this one would be cohesive without the split in priorities from the non-football private schools:
- UMass
- Boston College
- Syracuse
- Buffalo
- Pittsburgh
- Rutgers
- Maryland
- UConn
- West Virginia
- Temple

I think everyone would find a culturally cohesive group that could still compete with eastern Big 10 and northern ACC schools out of conference but still have a respectable chance at competing for conference championships every year instead of hoping to hit a great recruiting cycle every 4-5 years. No, they will not hit the media revenue numbers of the Big 10 or ACC, but that also gives them license to not participate in the facility/recruiting war that is making schools spend silly money.

That is not a terrible conference from a media revenue standpoint actually. There are teams in there with good football footing already, and there would be instant rivalries which always bring eyes to TVs and stories to tell on the talk shows....

That conference would hold up against the best G5 (the AAC) in football and be better than the AAC in basketball right out of the gate.

It will NEVER happen but that is an attractive package right there!

While initially posted the official announcement as an update to yesterday's post, felt this addition news of not hiring a search firm deserves a post and will move the rest here. Ryan Bamford did extremely well not hiring a search firm in the past and came out with a winner in the new hockey coach as we've been ranked and holding the #4 ranking for the past two weeks.

You have to think he has his short list and working it out.

Quote:Mark Whipple officially steps down as #UMass football coach. The school won't hire a search firm for this nationwide search.

Official release:
https://umassathletics.com/news/2018/11/...rship.aspx

Quote:AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced Wednesday, Nov. 21 that Mark Whipple is stepping down as head football coach.

The mutually agreed separation comes after Whipple completed his fifth season as head coach during his second stint with the University. He was also the head coach of the program from 1998- 2003 when he led the Minutemen to the 1998 Division I-AA National Championship. Overall, this past season was his 11th with UMass and his 21st as a collegiate head coach. His 65 career wins are the most for any head coach in the program's history.

"I want to thank Mark for his commitment to our football program for 11 years. He came back to UMass when this program needed a strong leader and respected mentor," said Bamford. "Mark provided the steady hand we needed in our early years as an FBS program and leaves our program in much better standing than when he came back in 2014. His legacy is not only cemented in his 65 wins and our 1998 FCS national championship, but in the way he positively impacted hundreds of young men in his program."

"I want to thank the UMass family for the opportunity of being the head football coach for 11 seasons," said Whipple. "I especially want to thank our coaches, players, support staff and football alumni for their tireless efforts and support. I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to help foster the growth of our student-athletes during these 11 years!"

A national search for the program's next head coach is underway.

There is a lot of love from past and especially current players for coach Whip. Will post just one tweet from a former player.
