That is the existing bathrooms at each end and locker room areas for some teams and the visitors locker room.

Its a start and the plans have evolved from the 2013 plans. Will quote McKinney's post on our board.
Quote:Perkins & Will, Page 202 wrote:
In the summer of 2013, UMass secured the services of Perkins+Will to study various stadium expansion options to increase seating capacity; improve the overall structure and site amenities; and enhance the fan experience with improved concessions, restrooms, and fanfare amenities. Since 1965, the stadium has seen minimal improvements. Today, the stadium includes the original 17,000 seats, a new 65,000 gsf Football Training and Performance Center, and a new 7,000 gsf Press Box.

The project team, consisting of Perkins+Will, UMass Athletics, UMass Senior Administration, and members of the Design & Construction Department, met over the course of four design charrettes to develop a series of improvement projects and build-out options for the existing stadium seating bowl and support facilities. The report was completed in the summer of 2013. Projects identified in the report included upgrading the existing stadium structure to improve accessibility; new restroom and concession areas support existing and increased seating capacities; addition of clubs and suites; south end zone seating; and the addition of an upper east grandstand seating structure. These improvements supported a stadium in the range of 30,000 – 35,000 seats. The combination of projects were studied with the existing east seating bowl left in place and renovated to current codes and the demolition and reconstruction of the east seating bowl.

More recently, UMass secured the services of Perkins+Will to update the 2013 Stadium Expansion Study to support a stadium, required code improvements, and fan amenities in support of a stadium in the range of 20,000 – 25,000 seats with the ability to expand in the future. The following chapters document the various projects and build-out options with associated project costs escalated to the mid-point of construction in 2019.

Great info - good luck. 02-13-banana COGS 04-cheers

In most large Metros people have short attention spans and only pull for a winner. UMass is going to have win regularly for people to turn their heads in their general direction.

Houston and UCF have had great success getting fans on their side and getting donors but it takes winning a lot for a while. So one of two things has to happen. Either the University invests in adding south end zone seating and other expansion or wait to win and hope a few alumni do or or local businessman decide to support the home team.

Really no point in adding seats until the demand is there, as stated before, winning cures all. If they win, the fans, and donors will come making expansion viable.
The upgrades that have been mentioned shouldn’t be prohibiting them from executing future expansion (if needed), based on what I’ve seen.

Chicken or the egg?

You have to have 30k to get decent home games. And you have to have decent home games to have good attendance.

Also, you can get the a good bit of the new stadium effect with half the stadium without the expense of rebuilding the whole stadium.

We can get good home games by utilizing Gillette. This is what I said on this subject on UMassHoops.com

On the one hand I see where you're coming from. We may not need a 30k seat stadium right now, but I don't see how we get into a conference and/or attract "high level opponents" without one. We either have a reasonably sized stadium designed for FBS (not one the size designed for College Division and Division II) or we accept that the more attractive games on the schedule will have to be played off-campus.

On the other, given the finances and higher priority of other facilities (like an IPF) I'm thinking the latter may be really the only viable option. If that's the case I can see why they'd be going down the path of "fan experience" rather than capacity. Even if we do have to play a game or two away from campus, with these cheap enhancements at the very least it will improve the experience for a lot of games and commencement. And that "experience" upgrade might help attract "mid level opponents". I'd think those upgrades would be good enough to get basically anyone outside of the P5. Surprisingly it appears they've been able to do this so far. But who knows how long they'll be able to do that.

RE: UMass Football
Posting from Mike Train I Fight Massachusetts post and doing while on vaca on a phone.

The Massachusetts Minutemen coaching staff pulled off quite the surprise on the recruiting front today as one of their top 2018 targets has found his way to Amherst despite taking a circuitous route.

Chattanooga, TN/Brainerd defensive back Joseph Norwood is enrolled at UMass for summer classes, as shown on the latest update to the Minutemen's roster page on their official athletic website. We confirmed the move with our sources who told us that Norwood is in fact in Amherst as a Minuteman.

This is quite the coup for the Minutemen staff, as Norwood is rated as a four-star 90 by 247Sports and a Composite three-star .8555. That Composite ranking makes Norwood the second-highest-rated high school recruit ever to enroll at UMass, and he is the first recruit to be rated as a four-star by at least one of the major recruiting services when he enrolled.

Fast forward to today when the Minutemen released their updated roster for the first day incoming freshmen would be eligible for workouts. Norwood is listed, and the UMass staff have managed to move in silence to pull off quite the recruiting steal.

None of our sources mentioned this was a possibility to us in recent months, which means every precaution was being taken to keep their pursuit of Norwood off the radar. If news of his availability had gotten out it would have made it much more difficult for UMass to grab him this late. As it stands the Minutemen staff have managed to land one of the highest-rated recruits in UMass history, and they did it without letting on they were trying.

With the addition of Norwood UMass has moved up the national recruiting class rankings for 2018 from #116 to #105. UMass is now one spot behind rival UConn who sits at #104. They also leapfrog Army into the #3 spot for independent programs.

According to a request for proposals (RFP) posted on the University of Massachusetts Building Authority web page, the school is looking for proposals to be submitted by the end of May 2018 to construct an indoor practice facility, permanent concession and bathroom options at McGuirk, and new HD video scoreboards at both McGuirk and Garber.

The complete 245-page document, which can be downloaded from the UMBA site via the link above, outlines a plan that would see project construction begun in March of 2019 and completed by June of 2020. There is also a pre-proposal briefing set to be held at the Football Performance Center at 10:00am on Monday, May 14th, 2018.

Per the outlined goals above, which can be found on page 4 of the RFP, the entire project is estimated to have a budget in the range of $10 million.

The long rumor donation is now a reality. You can click the link at the bottom of this post to see what Marty Jacobson has to say about the 5.58 Million dollar gift and about making the IPF a reality now and about the future of UMass Football.

Quote:AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced the finalization of a $5.58 million gift commitment by Marty Jacobson '68 to the University of Massachusetts Athletics Department on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. In honor of the tremendous gift, UMass will name its football team facility the 'Martin Jacobson Football Performance Center.'

Jacobson's gift represents a continuation of his staunch support for the University of Massachusetts. The 1968 graduate of the university, along with his brother Richard, previously provided $2.5 million for improvements to McGuirk Alumni Stadium, which funded the construction of the Martin and Richard Jacobson Press and Skybox Complex.

"I felt compelled to make this gift that allows Ryan Bamford and the athletics department to make several infrastructure improvements that will benefit our student-athletes and fans," said Jacobson. "We are in the midst of a renaissance and I hope this is a catalyst which continues that momentum. I'm excited about moving McGuirk Stadium into a modern era with some of the planned amenities and believe that the seasonal bubble will allow our student-athletes to train at a higher level than ever before."

"We are deeply appreciative of this extraordinary gift by Marty Jacobson, which will benefit both our student-athletes and greatly improve the fan experience at McGuirk Alumni Stadium," said Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy. "His continued and deeply generous support is truly a game changer for UMass Amherst."

The latest financial gift from Jacobson will fund experiential improvements to McGuirk Alumni Stadium for the University of Massachusetts community, current and future student-athletes and fans alike. The $5.58 million pledge provides the support necessary to design and construct a seasonal air-supported indoor structure at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, while his gift will also contribute to a high-definition scoreboard at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, among other planned fan experience facility improvements.

"The support Marty has provided the University of Massachusetts is truly transformational," said Bamford. "We are so thankful for his generosity and appreciative of his leadership in moving our athletics department forward through facility improvements that will benefit our sport programs and the University at large. We are extremely proud to name our outstanding football building the Martin Jacobson Football Performance Center."

The seasonal air-supported structure will directly benefit all University of Massachusetts student-athletes and will provide an indoor training space during the winter months when outdoor facilities are unavailable. The facility will also be available to the larger university community for selected special events.

"Marty Jacobson is a strong supporter of our athletics department and the football team in particular," said football head coach Mark Whipple. "His contributions to UMass football, including the donations he and his brother Richard previously made for the press and skybox complex, are paramount to our continued growth as a FBS program."

Construction will begin at the conclusion of the 2018 football season, and a formal timeline for completion will be established as the final scope for all the improvements within the project are determined.

Those who wish to support and celebrate the success of student-athletes at the University of Massachusetts are invited to join the Minutemen Club. For more information on this project or how to become a member of the Minutemen Club, please call 413-545-4290.

RE: UMass Football
UMass starting to trend in the right direction and operated a 1/2 Million in the black.

Article by Mike Traini.
Quote:UMass' total athletics revenue for 2017 came in at $48,054,005, and increase of $5,703,094 over their 2016 revenue total. Athletic department expenses also increased in 2017, checking in at $47,535,791. That expense number is an increase of $4,743,511 over their 2016 expenses.

For the 2017 athletic year, UMass operated in the black to the tune of $518,214. That is their first profit since the 2014 athletic year when they made $400,676. Last year the department ran a deficit of -$441,369, and in 2015 their deficit was -$384,938. Last year’s article and figures can be found here.

2017 was the second year in a row where both revenue and expenses came in at over $40 million.

Revisiting some of the individual categories we touched on last year:

UMass’ ticket sales revenue dropped from 2015 to 2016, but it rebounded in 2017 back up to $1,369,717. That is an increase of $175,352 over 2016’s numbers, and while it is not at the level of 2014’s or 2015’s ticket revenue, it is again trending in the right direction.

UMass’ facilities/overhead expenses jumped once again, this time to $7,054,316. That is an increase of $1,207,257 over 2016’s numbers. UMass has been putting a lot of work in over the past several years to both athletic space and academic space intended specifically for athletes, like the new weight room for the hockey team in the recently renovated Mullins Center. This number is sure to continue to rise over the next few years with the department and its programs progressing with improvements.

UMass' allocated funds percentage, or subsidy percentage, was 77.52% in 2017, which is down from 80.88% last year. That is a good sign as there was less money percentage-wise coming from student fees and institutional support than in 2016 (the subsidy and subsidy percentage are calculated based on the amount of athletic department revenue that comes from student fees, institutional support, and state money). UMass was also does not have the highest subsidy percentage inside the Top 63, that belongs to #62 James Madison at 81.14%. In a related piece from Arkansas State’s 247 network site AStateNation.com, they have listed the Group of Five schools from this report in order of self-generated revenue, which is money coming from sources other than students or the school itself. The article, which can be found here, includes that chart at the bottom and shows that UMass ranks #36 among G5 schools listed with $10,804,075 in self-generated revenue last year.

For the second year in a row UMass has reported their highest-ever revenue coming in from contributions at $2,281,046, and it is the first time that number has been over $2 million. That is an increase of $552,455 over 2016’s figure and is up almost $1 million from two years ago. That is a good sign and hopefully the athletic department will continue to see donation numbers rise in both total quantity and dollars.

...perhaps the AAC isn't so ridiculous of an idea in a few year's time. Good luck UMass.

$48m is a few million short of the AAC average, but:

1. You don't have superpower P5 schools in your backyard.
2. If you're operating in the black, then growing the budget isn't too farfetched.

Access to the Hunt Room at McGuirk Alumni Stadium is available for season ticket holders who donate a minimum of $1,500 to the Gridiron Club.

Season ticket holders will receive one (1) complimentary parking pass for Lot 22 or the South Stadium Loop per four (4) season tickets purchased. Parking in Lot 11 or Stadium Drive is only available for season ticket holders and requires a non-refundable donation of $50 per pass (one (1) pass per four (4) season tickets). Lot assignment is determined through the UMass Season Ticket Priority Point System.

UMass football season ticket holders can purchase additional season-long parking passes for $25 per pass in Lot 22 or the South Stadium Loop. Lot 33 is a game day cash-only lot and is not available on a season-long basis. Parking options for the contest against BYU at Gillette Stadium will be released at a later date.

RE: UMass Football
We play some good teams, teams picked top in their conference as Ohio - MAC East, App State - Sunbelt, Georgia #1 SEC, Boston College #4 ACC, USF - AAC is pretty good and BYU will be looking for some pay back after we beat them in their house. Not sure if we'll be bowl eligible and will be disappointed with anything less than 5 wins and bummed if we do not go bowling.

Here is the highlight of App State at McGuirk in last year, a 2 OT over Sunbelt Champs App State.

RE: UMass Football
Mike Traini had a very nice and long article with UMass Associate Athletic Director for Sales and Fan Experience Alan Pandiani.

Article Link

Some snippets from the article follow. In most cases there are extended details on the topics quoted and many more not quoted as bowl eligibility expectations, Coach Whipple and AD Ryan Bamford commitment to improving UMass Athletics every year.

Quote:Away game ticket sales for this season are moving well, said that as UMass fans there are essentially eight home games this year with UConn and BC on the schedule. Mentioned that during a conference UMass hosted last week on marketing for New England’s Division 1 schools, UConn’s representatives stated that they were projecting 6,000-10,000 UMass fans being in Hartford for that game. Believes that Georgia will be the best team UMass has ever faced, potentially a top three team in the nation.

Home game ticket sales as of now for McGuirk games, in order, are USF, Charlotte, Duquesne, Coastal Carolina, and Liberty. We were surprised to see UMass’ Homecoming game last on the list, but Pandiani believed that was a facet of a later-than-usual date for Homecoming and did not express concern. BYU game is moving well, says that a Mormon church group purchased 1,000 tickets last week and intend to buy more. BYU fans travel very well and the chance to see the Cougars at Gillette in November is a draw for their supporters.

A large part of Pandiani’s job description is dealing directly with fans, and he says that he has continued to get a great deal of quality feedback from the Minutemen faithful that he’s been able to put towards improving their experiences with the department both on and in between game days.

“Student attendance is the number one thing I’m asked about,” Pandiani said. “Without a doubt what I hear most about is, or was, an indoor practice facility, and students. I give a lot of credit to UMass fans because they understand the building process. I’m grateful for the people who have stuck with us, and what we’re optimistic about that this is a year that things start to pay off for people.”

Students absolutely love being where they are in Lot 11. UMass students love to be congregated in groups more than any other school I’ve ever seen.

While students may enjoy the Lot 11 experience, there were issues last season with ending their tailgate sometimes 30 to 40 minutes before the ensuing football game kicked off. According to Pandiani the school has taken strides to ensure that experience is smoother this year, stating that the administration has worked closely with their campus partners in order to make sure that the student tailgate will go right up until kickoff in the fall. Additionally the department will be employing a DJ this year who will be situated on top of the field hockey press box at Gladchuk Field who will be in charge of the music for the tailgate as it’s taking place. Pandiani said that the department likes the idea to both eliminate the wall of sound that developed last year when kids were able to bring in their own amplification devices for their music, and to allow them to have a way to grab everyone’s attention easily if they want to make an announcement or perhaps have a special guest address the crowd.

The announcement of the new Militia Student Rewards app was a welcome one for many UMass fans as it was a step towards increasing student participation and attendance. The app is designed to award points to students who check in at certain times during all sporting events and then put those points towards prizes that are available throughout the year. According to Pandiani, UMass is already over 25% of the way to their initial goal on app downloads.

“Our goal is to have 4,000 downloads before October 1st,” Pandiani said. “We currently sit at about 1,200 downloads from the new student orientations from kids who have come through and engaged with The Militia at tables during orientation.”

The department believes the rewards app will help them in a number of ways, not the least of which is having students, as Pandiani puts it, “get some skin in the game.” Going forward students won’t be able to get any giveaway item without the app, and they will have to prove that they have met the necessary point threshold in order to receive a particular item on any given night.
