You create rivalries by playing the same teams every year and by competing with them for championships, this is impossible with an Indy schedule.

Every bowl has secondary conferences as backups, UMass won't go to a bowl unless literally every other eligible team in FBS is already in. You're not worried because you don't understand the situation.

I think you don't understand the situation, you're just desperate for UMass to fail.

Most independents sign a contract with a bowl that will take them if they are eligible. With the SBC needing to add 1 or 2 new bowls I would think UMass could work out a similar deal to be the primary opponent to an SBC team should they be bowl eligible. If UMass was not bowl eligible the bowl would be free to invite any team they want.

Even though we know will be a decent team this season, it's nice to see a few publications acknowledge it. MaroonMusket posted an article thate we are in Phil Steele's 15 most improved teams.

Below is the list - ranked in order - of Steele's most improved teams for 2015. In order to qualify, a team couldnt have a winning record last season. We have included their win-loss record from 2014 in parenthesis for reference.

1. University of Miami (6-7)
2. Akron (5-7)
3. Michigan (5-7)
4. Pittsburgh (6-7)
5. Indiana (4-8)
6. Temple (6-6)
7. Texas (6-7)
8. Northwestern (5-7)
9. Ball State (5-70
10. Colorado (2-10)
11. Ohio University (6-6)
12. California (5-7)
13. Middle Tennessee (6-6)
14. Massachusetts (3-9) <-- we lost 5 close games
15. North Carolina (6-7)

http://umass.247sports.com/Bolt/Predicti...5-37793620

We play 4 teams on this list, two at Gillette - Akron and Temple, and two on the road Colorado and Ball State.

U. Mass, biggest rivals should be U. Conn., Boston College, New Hampshire, and other northeastern schools that plays the sports. MAC does not have that for them maybe for Buffalo. The others are midwestern schools. U.Mass. will get into the AAC better than some of the western MAC teams. U. Mass. is on the AAC's radar in the future.

I understand it clearly, that's why I'm voicing my concern. I'm desperate for UMass to suceed, that's why I'm speaking out, I think your lack of a long term plan is foolish and deadly. If I wanted UMass to fail I would be cheering you on into the abyss.

I'm saying that being independent is not an impediment to rivalry. The glory years of Miami/FSU were independents. Army/Navy has always been independents. If a rivalry is natural, it will occur.

I'm saying that being independent is not an impediment to rivalry. The glory years of Miami/FSU were independents. Army/Navy has always been independents. If a rivalry is natural, it will occur.

Its also a much different time. Both Miami and Florida ST were indy back then. Today most schools are in conferences. UH and Rice is a perfect example. They are rivals, but for the most part, Rice vs Houston games have mostly been played while they shared a conference. It makes it much easier to schedule.

Houston only has 4 OOC games now to fit Rice in. We have set our schedule to include 2P5's a year and one FCS home buy game. That leaves just one G5 OOC game a year. If we play Rice every year, we would never play any of the other Texas or Louisiana G5's. This is the kind of thing Indy teams are having to deal with today.

btw--Houston vs Rice is scheduled for 2017 and 2018. I think the 2 teams will continue to play, but it wont be every year. My guess is Rice will probably be in a rotation with UTSA, LaTech/ULL, Texas St, and UNT on the Houston schedule. It may even be a 2 on 2 off type of thing.

U. Mass. is 36-34-2 against U. Conn.
U. Mass. is 5-20-0 against Boston College.

Most of their other rivals are in the CAA, dropped football, schools now at the lower level, or defunct schools.

Yet another comment not based on any reality. You should try to educate yourself on this stuff before you start typing.

There is no value in New England for football. None. Look at how many people live in Mass and how many show up for their state flagship to play. Its' obvious people do not care. There is why the state flagships in these wealthy new England states play in leagues like the patriot and get nothing for TV money.

You mean the flagship based in western MA that plays its games in eastern MA (100 miles from campus) that has only been playing FBS football for 3 seasons and had an impotent product for the first 2?

Yeah, that's clearly a good amount of data to make that judgment on.

the past is no indication of the present. Its 2015 and college football is totally different. UMass has no natural rivalries in FBS, UConn and BC *could* be but they would never allow it because they think they're too good to be on equal ground as UMass. Two teams need to play regularly for a rivalry to form but nobody is going to schedule UMass as an OOC game year in and year out, especially if you start to improve and become more competitive.

Dayton is D1. Wayne State, Michigan was a former D1 school. Schools can changed their minds. Northern Kentucky said they will never go to D1 since they did not have the money to. Then next thing you know? They got the invite and they moved to D1 when North Alabama was ready to make the leap. Plus, if you don't like my opinions on who would move up? Then just ignore me.

RE: UMass Football
In a perfect world (if UMass got its sh-t together, Army got serious about football, etc.), I'd like to add these schools to the AAC:

1) UMass
2) Colorado State
3) Air Force
4) Army

But we don't live in a perfect world, so we'll do our best with what we have.
