The MAC is supportive of the cost of attendance, but it doesn't have a leaguewide mandate on how the measure should be implemented.
Earlier this year, Kent State University director of athletics Joel Nielsen told Crain's the COA, depending on whether it's awarded to every scholarship athlete, could cost the university more than $1 million per year. University of Akron director of athletics Tom Wistrcill estimated the COA would be a $600,000 to $700,000 expense for the Zips.
The two athletic directors recently told Crain's their universities have yet to make a final decision on the cost of attendance.
Kent State is still “working on options, funding sources, etc.,” Nielsen said.
Wistrcill, meanwhile, said Akron expects to wrap up its budget in late June.
Ohio University director of athletics Jim Schaus expressed similar sentiments, saying there are “many financial aspects still up in the air.”
The University of Toledo will award the cost of attendance to all of its scholarship athletes, AD Mike O'Brien said. But the Rockets' athletic director said the amount hasn't been finalized.
At least one Ohio school from the MAC has made a firm decision on the COA. (Bowling Green didn't respond to requests for comment.)
Miami University will award the full cost of attendance — which will be $763 for in-state students and $1,873 for out-of-state students, assistant AD for athletic communications Dave Meyer said — to all 133 athletes who are on full scholarships.
Meyer said the RedHawks will also give partial stipends to athletes who are receiving some type of athletic aid.
The total expense is anticipated to be $375,046 for the 2015-16 school year.
