WBB Series with ND
Being reported by Nick from the local paper on twitter:

Quote:Toledo women's BB has agreed to a series with national runner-up Notre Dame. Rockets go there in 15, Fighting Irish come to Toledo in 16.

That's great news. Finally, some recognition from one of the big names nearby.

In the end, ND will probably never make it here but if it works out, gotta be in the seats for that one...04-rock

Why wouldn't ND come here? Road win against a solid (by then) mid-major might help their rankings. Of course they'll lose but they probably don't realize that.

Wow, real nice get for the Rockets. Notre Dame had a huge women's bball following when they came here to play at Savage for the NCAA tourney. South Bend is a straight shot, easy drive from Toledo. I hope a good amount of us Rocket fans make the trip. We should be much more experienced when they come to Savage.

If Notre Dame signs a deal I am relatively confident that they will honor their contract. Notre Dame certainly showed up to play at Savage the last time the Lady Rockets played a series with them. I remember they had Ruth Riley on that team and they handed it to the Lady Rockets pretty good---maybe a 20 point margin-- but then that was an extremely good ND team.

That was a while back (around 1999 or 2000-- I remember Jenn Markwood was still playing and had a decent game as I recall)--I am sure Fred remembers it and some of the rest of you as well.

Also sometime around that period---maybe a year or so later---nationally ranked #4 Duke also showed up at Savage and they left with a loss. However as I recall the Ladies managed to lose their next game or so to lesser competition which cost them all of that hard earned momentum in national spotlight they had gained by the BIG Duke win.

This is a great coup assuming it is true but remember UT Lady Rockets Basketball didn't start with Coach Cullop's arrival (revived, yes; started, no) although she has done a remarkable job and the best may be yet to come------however, at present I don't think the program is back to the zenith it operated at in the last few of the Fennelly years and the first four of the Ehlen years, WNIT Champion not withstanding.

You're spot on about ND playing UT at Savage Hall, T-Town. It was UT's first game of the 1999-2000 season and it was also a homecoming game for ND's Ericka Haney who played her high school ball at Central Catholic.

It was UT's first game without Knuth, Favre, and Tews who had graduated and ND thumped Toledo pretty good (68-52) in front of a big UT crowd that had stuck around after a home afternoon football game.

After Toledo beat Duke in 2001 I remember talking with a Duke player and her parents and they felt that Duke was intimidated by the Toledo crowd. That has always stuck with me as I find it hard to believe that a team that plays its home games in crazy Cameron Indoor Arena had problems with the little old Toledo fans.

The game following the Duke victory, Toledo traveled to Evansville where they were beaten 69-64. In her first year as the Evansville coach was a relative unknown in coaching circles named Tricia Cullop.

A Duke home crowd as a player is one thing but a lot of the ACC schools don't have a good woman's basketball following, so seeing what Toledo can do in terms of woman's basketball attendance is quite impressive.
