"Universities Continue to Grapple with Cost of Attendance" - Crain's Cleveland
http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/2...attendance

Quote:MAC still crunching numbers

The Mid-American Conference, a 12-member league based in Cleveland, doesn't seem to be as far along in its COA decision-making as the Horizon. The reason for that is simple, but also very complicated: All of the MAC's members have football programs (compared to two in the Horizon League), which makes the COA a much larger expense.

The MAC is supportive of the cost of attendance, but it doesn't have a leaguewide mandate on how the measure should be implemented.

Earlier this year, Kent State University director of athletics Joel Nielsen told Crain's the COA, depending on whether it's awarded to every scholarship athlete, could cost the university more than $1 million per year. University of Akron director of athletics Tom Wistrcill estimated the COA would be a $600,000 to $700,000 expense for the Zips.

The two athletic directors recently told Crain's their universities have yet to make a final decision on the cost of attendance.

Kent State is still “working on options, funding sources, etc.,” Nielsen said.

Wistrcill, meanwhile, said Akron expects to wrap up its budget in late June.

Ohio University director of athletics Jim Schaus expressed similar sentiments, saying there are “many financial aspects still up in the air.”

The University of Toledo will award the cost of attendance to all of its scholarship athletes, AD Mike O'Brien said. But the Rockets' athletic director said the amount hasn't been finalized.

At least one Ohio school from the MAC has made a firm decision on the COA. (Bowling Green didn't respond to requests for comment.)

Miami University will award the full cost of attendance — which will be $763 for in-state students and $1,873 for out-of-state students, assistant AD for athletic communications Dave Meyer said — to all 133 athletes who are on full scholarships.

Meyer said the RedHawks will also give partial stipends to athletes who are receiving some type of athletic aid.

The total expense is anticipated to be $375,046 for the 2015-16 school year.

NIU's COA will be at least $800k per year. The checks for NIU athletes will be sent out in August which is the earliest they can be issued.

As far as I understand it the comparison of the amount its silly because it depends on the University and athletics has very little to do with that. Schools are not going to want to increase their COA artificially because that will show up for the non-athletic students and they might have potential students end up going to more affordable schools even though it cost relatively the same as before.

Arkansas State announced they will award the COA at a rate of $4000k per student. Some other Sun Belt schools have advised they will award but none have come out and put a $$ figure down besides stAte. Our AD feels like this will really help our programs with recruiting and moving to the top tier of G5 schools.

Jonesboro more expensive to live than say Ann Arbor? 05-stirthepot

Indeed, I believe many are afraid that schools will try to dangle bigger bucks in front of student-athletes, esp. those who need it more as a recruiting too.

I copied this from the Sun Belt board. Our AD quoted in a Little Rock Newspaper saying the school will pay out 4k even though the COA amount is 4500.

Quote: The full annual commitment will be $819,200 toward ASU's 204.8 scholarships, Mohajir said. The payments will be made three times each semester, and the expense will be added into ASU's annual budget, which broke $20 million for the first time this year.

"We knew this was an opportunity for us to differentiate ourselves and to give ourselves an advantage," Mohajir said. "It's all part of the mix to be one of the best teams in the Group of Five and to compete with any team in the [Power] Five."

4K per student. Not 400K.

About half of the SBC has not committed to offer this yet, so we've gone public early to try and get a recruiting advantage.

No one is sure why it works that way. Georgia Southern's cost is like 6K per athlete for Statesboro, yet Alabama's is like 1500 per athlete. Financial Aid formula's are not very clear, and neither are NCAA rules. The last thing any G5 school wants is to offer too much and get the NCAA on their back.

Cost of Attendance has ramifications that go way beyond athletics. It affects federal funding and financial aid. I can't see any university fudging or adjusting the numbers just for athletics.

If it had been $4,000k/student ... that is to say, $4 million per student ... I dare say that would have been a recruiting advantage.

Except that after one year they'd probably retire. 04-jawdrop
