Thinking only positive thoughts, does anyone know-- or has it even been determined yet-- whether the Baton Rouge Super-Regional will be played Friday-Sunday or Saturday - Monday? Obviously, the extra day of rest would at least give us a fighting chance. Without it, aside from Blake Fox, I'm not sure who'll be ready to pitch on Saturday.

Let's win today first! But you could easily throw McCanna on Friday Night.

Orewiler was shaking off two meltdowns in as many weeks; Chandler was apoplectic over the strike zone; Byrd found his way in from the cold because we were running out of options. And these three men were the deciding factors in our victory. Outstanding.

To me, Byrd's double was the greatest moment we've had since Adam Zornes hit THAT home run back in 2008. I just could not be happier for the Byrdman. He looked like he was really trying to sort it out, and lo and behold he did.

I am still very concerned about our ability to withstand pressure, because we haven't quite exorcised that demon yet. Hitting is also a big worry. However, if we get past ULaLa and pitch and play defense like we did over the last two games, we will be a very tough out in the next round. Let us hope that our guys come back later today with a chip on their collective shoulder.

Again, what a win. But I think we can and should get more. Bring on the Fighting Fleurs-de-lis.

(And I do not mean to fail to acknowledge the contributions of all of our players. Everyone did their respective jobs in the field and then some. They were utterly fantastic. They had to be, because that was a good team that they beat.)

What a story of redemption for Byrd, Orewiler, and fielding in general!

??? Easily? No. Blake would almost assuredly be our Game 1 starter, whether Friday or Saturday. McCanna did throw 90 pitches on Sunday eve; meaning he could go on Saturday; not Friday. I suspect Jordan and Orewiler will not be available until the Sunday game, at the earliest.

Four day rest is somewhat standard in the post-season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Blake get some action tonight. History shows that teams will often use their Friday night starter on the Monday of a regional if they're in a pinch.

Have been spending the weekend with my son, so no internet.

Checked the local paper's sports section this morning and was pleasantly surprised to find that Rice's win made the National news (I'm sure this story was reprinted in many papers around the country today!) Important to note that Rice scores of any kind rarely make the paper here. Once in a great while, maybe a one or two sentence blurb. Other than the national baseball Championship in 2003, I can't recall as long a story about Rice in our paper. We need more stuff like this long, wordy story across the country.

Congratulations to the Rice baseball Owls, also to Leon Byrd and Austin Orewiler, for not giving up and throwing in the towel as many naysayers on this board had already done and/or alluded to over the last several days.

As I posted before, the baseball team and Head Coach Wayne Graham are by far the most successful of Rice's major sports, and always deserving of the benefit of the doubt, no matter what.

And no matter what happens win or lose in the Regional championship game with ULaLa, Rice baseball has once again had a more successful season than any other major sport at Rice for the 21st year in a row, doing far more than any other major sport at Rice has in a long, long time. I look forward to Men's basketball season where I'm increasingly confident Coach Rhoades will be working on beginning to challenge Wayne Graham's success and give him a run for his money while he's here at Rice. These are the kind of Head Coaches and program mentalities Rice needs more of to build a National narrative of success, not mediocrity.

Here's a copy of and link to the story in today's paper:

Rice tops Houston 3-2 in 20, tourney's 4th-longest game
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
4:16 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2015 | Filed in: Nation

HOUSTON — Leon Byrd hit an RBI double down the right-field line, giving Rice a 3-2 victory over Houston in 20 innings early Monday in the fourth-longest game in NCAA Tournament history.

Rice (37-21) advanced to play Louisiana-Lafayette in the regional championship on Monday after winning the game which lasted 6 hours, 2 minutes.

Ryan Chandler singled with one out off Aaron Garza (1-4) to set up Byrd's double. Tristan Gray followed with a single, but Byrd was thrown out at the plate. Kirby Taylor fouled out to end the inning.

Kyle Survance singled off Austin Orewiler (6-2) to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Josh Vidales and Chris Iriart each flew out, and the jubilant Owls mobbed each other in celebration on the field.

Houston (43-20), which tied it in the eighth on Corey Julks' home run to send it to extra innings, was eliminated despite setting a program record with 23 strikeouts.

Houston coach Todd Whitting was long gone from the game when it ended after being ejected in the fifth inning. Taylor bunted with Gray on first, and catcher Ian Rice's throw to second pulled the shortstop off the base — making Gray safe on the error. Whitting came out to argue the play and was tossed by second base umpire Mark Chapman.

John Williamson hit a one-out double in the 16th for Rice. On the next play, Hunter Kopycinski singled to right, but Williamson was thrown out at the plate. Following the play, Williamson and the catcher Rice started yelling at each other and benches began to clear, but the umpires restored order.

Williamson reached with two outs in the 18th on an error, stole second and reached third on another error, but Garza got Kopycinski to ground out to end the threat.

After Rice loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, Charlie Warren hit a two-run single up the middle to put the Owls on top 2-0.

Orewiler (6-2) allowed three hits and struck out seven over 9 1/3 relief innings for Rice. Owls starter Kevin McCanna allowed one run and six hits in 5 1/3 innings before being replaced by Glenn Otto, who also gave up one run but just two hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Garza was the hard-luck loser after striking out 11 and giving up six hits over nine innings in relief for Houston. Cougars starter Kyle Dowdy allowed two runs — one earned — and nine hits with 10 strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings. He threw 137 pitches.

Survance hit an RBI single in the fifth to cut Houston's deficit to 2-1.

What made this that much sweeter was that we knocked UH out. Marathon game and the best possible outcome.

They can have the Silver Glove! I'll bet the metallic taste in their mouths this morning isn't nearly as sweet as they thought it was a few weeks ago.

Amazing game equalled by this thread. I watched through the 12th and went to bed...woke up at 4 Pacific and 46 pages had grown to 76. You filled the zombie baseball segments with great lines and got ba k into the game whenever the players did. That baby should get a full ride, being the first pregnancy labor delivery and infancy in a single losers bracket contest. It's our winners bracket now...and the kid's.

Poor loser.

Here's his explanation, but i think he's really going overboard with respect to his complaint regarding Shock G's gamesmanship and how the players were allegedly acting throughout the night:
