RE: Areas around WMU Campus getting "rough"
I've been a victim to a crime in Kzoo (I left front door unlocked and some little rat ran around stealing stuff from multiple houses in a spree; stole my change and my roommates' CD booklet).

I've also committed a crime (but was dropped) -- for booing off my own front porch (and making a couple comments) at the cops who broke up a party across the street. They got me for Excessive Noise and took me to jail. In the report, the victim of the crime was the Cop himself, where they normally fill out the other resident's contact information who complained. They were shocked that I didn't have much alcohol in my system. It was during a Final Four game an eon ago.

So to not be guilty of implying as you stated, who are you specifically calling out that live on the north side, as natives?

Your choice in word.

All after numerous others posted including the originator who pointed out that the parents concern was not about lack of diversity or a generalization about race but specifically of potential violent criminal behavior, toward their child.

And apparently after you deleted another one of your well thought, tasteful and intelligent posts.

Now that you have written, not implied, that I am a racist, I'll ask who's the racist here?

Can we stop waving around the R word, every time we debate politics in this forum? In my view Political Correctness is little more than an Informal Inquisition intended to suppress free and open debate. Name calling is NOT argument. Continually implying that someone has ulterior motives for what they say and do is poor debate.

When you've got nothing else, imply someone else is racist.

Not letting you off that easy. You specifically wrote northside Natives.

Implying who from the north side?

For any of us who lived and worked in Kalamazoo for at least a decade would like you to enlighten us?

Looks like you got your liberal white guilt caught in your fly McZipper. You're exposed! That's an arrestble offense.

Trying to come off with rhetoric being a homeboy getting down with by calling out the North side natives while dismissing 89's concerns as a parent with 1000 eyerolls because you assumed he was a Cracker from Holland.

Quit while you're a head.

The man who is insinuating areas around are campus getting "rough" because he happened to read a couple news reports about armed robberies on campus over the last few years thinks he has an argument of substance.

I concurred that what I had read somewhat aligned with the stated observation of 89's friend, 89 and some others.

You jumped in with the insinuation that as a "Holland Cracker" 89's friend and 89 were worth a 1000 eye rolls for their observation. An observation that you then linked to the North Side Natives. No one made any mention or insinuation that the criminal activity was linked to that demographic. Only you jumped to that conclusion as you frequently jump to conclusions.

Then after you put 05-footinmouth did 89 in response to the insinuation of race, that it was irrelevant.

I then 05-stirthepot with you by pointing out your clear bias. And you took the bait hook line and sinker.

End of story.

RE: Areas around WMU Campus getting "rough"
If I were a parent of a student these days, my three have been out now for over a decade and a half, my biggest concern as a parent would be the excessive use of alcohol on campuses and the "high liberation of academia". I think my parents concerns were excessive sex and drugs.

I'd be more concerned about whether my child was getting a great education and having a life experience that would prepare them for life after youth.

I just thought that I would deflect some of the discussion here. I agree with BP, whenever we discuss issues do we need to descend into the gutter and insult stage? There is a great diversity of people and opinion, and it is interesting to view things from another's angle.

Always proud to be a Bronco, RTB.

Thanks acer....... I agree 100%.

I do believe that Western should have a PR strategy around this issue. Many opinions about schools are formed during casual conversations without all the facts. Perception can become reality quickly......right or wrong.

That said, my son is still very interested in going to Western and I would be very proud to have another Bronco in the family!

Well said, Acer. We have a great university and we need to promote the positives, not show folks our worst faces while we sling fecal matter at each other.

President Dunn has moved the bar up high, the next President will have a real challenge continuing to separate us from the 'pack' of other state universities.

Yep, it's the biggest social challenge facing colleges. It was when I was there, it still is. It's a complex issue, but in short: We glorify alcohol use yet legally enforce abstinence until a certain age and we all know abstinence simply doesn't work. We also criminalize other forms of recreation which certainly have fewer wide-ranging ramification as excessive alcohol use.

What do you mean by the "high liberation of academia"?
