RE: What If - Baseball?
Since its baseball season, let me do the unthinkable and "bump" the baseball thread from a year ago in case anyone wants to discuss it.

OK so we dropped mens golf - 5 scholarships. Just pick up womens bowling to equal out the schollies and then add baseball with 11 scholarships. Problem solved. Batter up!

RE: What If - Baseball?
Congratulations to the three AAC baseball teams who were invited to the NCAA tournament (regionals) - UCONN, Tulane, and ECU. Also the Big12 got three in. Navy also was invited as the Patriot League Champs. So that is 4 teams IN with AAC connections. The big disappointment was Houston who was the preseason favorite, but played inconsistent come crunch time. If they had won the tournament, they would be in and probably UCONN as well to give the AAC 4 teams IN. Also, ORU got in by winning their league as well as our old neighbor Rice. So the city of Houston got at least one team IN.

As stated before, I think the AAC should look at inviting WSU into the league to get a 4th baseball team into the western side. It helps balance the league since there are 5 on the eastern side. Helping balance the conference in all sports is crucial to keeping the league together long term imo.

But of course at some future point, TU might look at adding baseball again as well. I emphasize the word "might". If TU could make money by playing in the revitalized downtown, that is the key.

Feel free to reread this long "what if baseball " thread since nothing has really changed other than the conference appears stronger and the baseball TV contract is now established. We have a bunch of natural rivals that would jump at the chance of playing baseball here (downtown) and help sell out the place. That means money and stability.

IMO

RE: What If - Baseball?
The AAC went 2-1 today in the first round of the NCAA baseball regionals. UCONN beat Ga Tech and ECU beat Bryant, but Tulane lost to Boston College. And our "connected" companion (in FB) Navy (who plays baseball in the Patriot League) lost to North Carolina St. Good luck to all our AAC teams in post season. Its double elimination so Tulane is still alive but can't lose again.

As of this morning, ECU was still alive by beating Virginia, Tulane was still in by beating Ole Miss and Navy beat St Mary's. UCONN will play Ga Tech in an elimination game after being beaten by Florida. Good luck to all those teams!

ECU beat Texas Tech last night in Lubbock 8-6 so they will be playing today for an NCAA CWS berth in Omaha. Game is 2pm and is set for ESPNU. Good luck to the Pirates and we will hopefully see them in Omaha. All they need is one win out of two games left in Lubbock to get a CWS berth.

Texas Tech beat ECU today 3-1 so they will play the deciding game tomorrow. Winner goes to the CWS in Omaha. ECU had several chances to break the game wide open, but just couldn't make the plays down the stretch. Good luck tomorrow to the Pirates. Game time should be 2pm again and on ESPNU.

RE: What If - Baseball?
Texas Tech eliminated the Pirates in the super regional in Lubbock yesterday, so no CWS this year for the AAC. But ECU still had a successful year beating the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers in the regional.

Good luck next year to all the baseball teams in the AAC!

Congratulations to Coastal Carolina, the 2016 CWS and National Champions by defeating Arizona in Omaha. There is a lesson in this - that in the sport of baseball, there is a level playing field. The AAC can excell in this sport!

A few AAC baseball games on TV this week - some of you might be interested in watching. Most all of the games are aired on CBSSN.

Tuesday - 7pm - LSU @ Tulane

Wednesday - 6pm - NC St @ ECU

RE: What If - Baseball?
Watching the Indiana St v Dallas Baptist game today and something popped into my head that "The AAC needs another baseball program". There is one that is pretty good who presently plays that sport in the MVC and is a nice geographic fit with a pretty good recent history of post season --Dallas Baptist. With the addition of WSU in the league, we are a little more balanced in that sport with Houston, Tulane, Memphis and now WSU. But the east has 5 teams in UCONN, Cincy, ECU, UCF and USF.

IMO we should balance as much as possible the AAC on both sides since it helps the travel situation. If you look at a map of baseball teams, the AAC needs to fill the absence-gap in the Dallas area with an associate baseball program. DBU has a very nice baseball facility on their campus and like I said is really cranking up their entire BB program. Maybe we should consider raiding the MVC just one more time.

Didn't know where to put this, but congratulations to the TU womens softball team who beat ECU there and has now won the AAC regular season title which gives them the top seed in the upcoming AAC tournament. They have once again been a dominant team in the conference. Good job girls!

BTW AAC softball will get an additional RPI bump next year when WSU starts playing in the conference. WSU may be the main competition for our girls next year in softball.

TU wins its 37th game by defeating UCF yesterday 3-0. Two more games Saturday and Sunday with UCF. If we reach 40 wins which we should at the AAC tournament, I think we end up in the top 20 with a good NCAA seed. But we need to get seeded away from Norman. Unfortunately, I doubt that happens.

RE: What If - Baseball?
Well since this is the "slow season" before we start playing FB, I think I will bring up something just for "thought" and possible "discussion".

We are evidently playing K-State in Wichita at the Intrust Bank Arena city owned facility next year - a neutral site. Good or bad it might start a trend of more neutral site games in the future. Thats fine, and something I am in favor of if feasable. So how about morphing this concept into another sport, something that may not necessarily be a TU thing, but an AAC thing.

Ready? Here it is. An OSU/OU v WSU baseball game at OneOk Field.

OU and OSU play a game or two there every year already and with our new conference brother close by, there might be enough interest to start an annual baseball game as a B12 vs AAC event here. It would, imo, spark a lot of interest. Now since we (TU) don't have baseball, we could support whichever team we feel closest to. I would probably go with WSU, but many others would probably wear Orange or Red.

So a neutral site contest featuring a B12 v AAC game might become a neat yearly event here - maybe. IMO its worth a try.

BTW - Let TU be the host of the game and allow for a cut in the proceeds.

Discuss.

RE: What If - Baseball?
Congratulations to the Houston Cougar baseball team for winning the AAC championship with a 6-0 win over ECU. Now hopefully USF and UCF can also get to a regional as at large selections. The league really needs multiple teams with a chance to make the CWS in Omaha. The AAC is the 4th best conference in the country according to its rpi numbers. I was actually hoping ECU would win since their chance of playing in a regional was not very good, but the best team obviously won.

UCF in Tallahassee Fl

USF in Gainesville Fl

RE: What If - Baseball?
UCF lost their first contest in a regional, so did host Houston to Iowa, but USF beat the devil out of Bethune. Hopefully, we can get a team or two into the CWS later on. We need to develope that habit.

On a slightly different note, I also want to see the AAC get several teams into the Womens Softball World Series, but the first order of business is to improve the strength of the league with teams considered strong other than TU for at large selections. Teams like the Florida schools, Houston and now WSU are strong programs that, with a little improvement, should meet that goal.
