@kbohls
Lance Aldridge of Austin Sports Commission tells me Austin will pursue bowl game in 2016, not this year. "We thought it was best to wait."

I think this is a very wise decision. Allows for a better view of how many teams are left at home next year. Also, I would not be shocked to see Austin go for a P5-P5 matchup. The other Non-ESPN networks would probably love to get a P5 vs P5 bowl game. I could see the B12, ACC and B1G all be interested.

Pretty sure the AAC will be involved in Austin in some capacity

RE: 2015 Bowl Date/Time Updates - Thought I create a single thread for updates.
With all the contracts signed, there's no space for any P5 teams left.
ACC- 9 guaranteed bowls.
Big Ten- 9 guaranteed bowls- 10 if they make the SF
Big 12- 7 guaranteed bowls- 8 if they make the SF
Pac 12- 7 guaranteed bowls- 8 if they make the SF
SEC- 10 guaranteed bowls- 11 if they make the sf

So not much that can happen right now. Right now, only 18 P5 teams not accounted for- and that number much closer to 15. Considering there were 16 not eligible P5 teams last year- the P5 games are pretty much set. They can't dump the G5 game for a P5 game.

Since there is no contract for this season, it is all open to new bidders. Again just my opinion, but if two P5's are willing to tie-in, they will get first shot at the bowl next year if it is not on an ESPN network.

I think it will be at Texas Stadium with a B12 tie-in vs ACC or B1G. I imagine FOX, CBS and NBC would all jump buying the bowl like ESPN for a chance to televise such a match. If ESPN buys the bowl, then I do see the AAC having a chance to keep it.

BTW just updated Military Bowl - Dec 28th at 2:30 PM

The problem is the P5 is at capacity for bowl slots already. They can't cancel a contract with a bowl to get into a different bowl.

2015 Bowl Teams
ACC- 12 Teams (With ND). One Team with 5 wins
Big Ten- 10 Bowl Teams. One Team with 5 wins
Big 12- 7 Bowl Teams
Pac 12- 8 Bowl Teams. Two Teams with 5 wins
SEC- 12 Bowl Teams One Team with 5 wins

With ND being an ACC Tie-in, ACC needs to to add another bowl. Look what happen last year with Pitt. They had to find an at-large and that was with 10 Guaranteed Bowls. What I do think may happen is that Austin might be moved up in the pecking order by the ACC and B12. Leaving the G5 match-ups St. Pete, Military, Armed Forces/Texas bowls go unfilled if they don't have enough teams. Slots aren't cancelled but just not filled.

BTW Updated the Belk Bowl moved to Dec 30th.

RE: 2015 Bowl Date/Time Updates - Thought I create a single thread for updates.
and if that year happens this year..
ACC- 10 bowls, 12 teams- +2
Big Ten- 10 bowls, 10 teams. even
Big 12 7 bowls, 7 teams. even
Pac 12- 8 bowls, 8 teams- even
SEC 11 bowls, 12 teams +1

The problem is the contracts were written to get a certain slot ACC/Big 12 team. They can't just do a new deal to get around that for a new bowl- things don't work that way.

they might be able to do a ACC/SEC bowl at the bottom rung. But given how many teams got in at 6 wins, I don't think they would do that.

Actually this year, the ACC only has 9 bowls. St. Pete is not part of this season and the option of getting into the BWW (Formerly Capitol One Bowl) is not available since the Orange is a Semi. The ACC could have in theory have +3 teams to place.

As with most contracts, there are loop holes. The B12 and ACC have the Champs Bowl which is the First selected ACC Team and I think the 2nd B12 team. Look at the proposed Australia bowl, do you think it will be the last place P12 and MWC teams? Since the ACC uses tiers, depending on the payouts and time slot offered, it may be able to move into the Tier 1 bowl above the lower tiers. As for the B12, I have no idea but I imagine if they want to move it up, both conferences have the money & power to do it. If anything we have learned, bowl contracts aren't solid as they were in the past.

From the article - Additional comments by Aldridge to the Austin Business Journal further suggest that Austin Bowl officials are far from wedded to the idea of keeping their AAC and Sun Belt tie-ins.

RE: 2015 Bowl Date/Time Updates - Thought I create a single thread for updates.
I think the key is this statement from him-
"We'll reach out to the NCAA and ESPN and talk about the bowl business in general since it's possible there might be some attrition in the number of bowl games," he said. "That could mean some different conferences free up as a result."

If there is no attrition, going to be tough to shake a P5 team free until after 2019 season, when all the bowl contracts go up for bid again...

About the Australia Bowl- it's very possible it would be the lowest teams. They are aware of this-
http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...ntain-west

Sergeant also said he's realistic his bowl could get one of the last selections from each conference.

"That's part of the discussions," Sergeant said. "We know where we fit in the food chain. We're not expecting the No. 1 choice. We're going into this with our eyes wide open."

RE: 2015 Bowl Date/Time Updates - Thought I create a single thread for updates.
You keep missing the point S20, they are not cancelling any bowl agreements. However, they can add more bowls and if they don't have enough teams to fill the slots then they just don't send a team. Just look at the ACC, since they use the tier system. In theory, the ACC could add the Austin bowl to the lower tier. The lower tier does not have a pecking order to be filled. The ACC can choose to fill them as they choose. I believe the B10 does a similar thing with the lower bowls. IE: They could add Austin as a lower tier bowl and choose how to fill it. The SEC and B12 does have more the issue of assigning slots to bowls. It does seem those two conferences would be required to send the last choice to the bowl. As with any contract, there is always a way out. Just may be what you are willing or able to pay.

This is where I have to give Aresco and the AAC credit, they have showed the outside the box thinking with bowls by selling off slots and trying to get more bowls than they possibly can fill. I think you will see bowls and the P5 try to use these ideas.

BTW

then why did the guy from Austin say that pretty much there would need to be some attrition to get some conferences freed up as a result?

Also, I would venture a guess that the contracts the bowls have say that they would get between a 7th to 9th selection for that game, and not that they are 3rd tier. huge difference there.

RE: 2015 Bowl Date/Time Updates - Thought I create a single thread for updates.
Dude, how about we agree to disagree. I am willing to say neither one of us knows exactly what is written in any contract. My view, these bowl contracts are not as solid as they were in the past and the bowls now needs the P5 more than P5 needs the bowl. I believe your view is the bowl contracts are ironclad and the P5 needs the bowl more than the bowl needs the P5. Until the Austin bowl announces it's official tie-ins and date, neither one of us will know which view turns out to be correct.

BTW
