Thank God nothing has changed in the world since 1912. I'm sure we miss the horse manure and flies all over the streets.

Nike & all the schools will say the school owns the brand but by accepting the Nike branding designs & most important the contract & money that is the consideration, Nike then gets exclusive rights to the brand use for the contract term, which is generally of such length that the brand takes hold, becomes recognized, creates its own "tradition" and essentially locks Nike into the process thereafter.
I don't know about other schools, but ours historically in the past, could use all the help it could get in the way of branding or marketing.
The way the social media is ran by the athletic department (if it really is the athletic departmant) is good. The whole Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter thing is great by that team. But when it comes to branding, it is not good. Everything from fonts, to colors... It's not really that good.
"Branding" in the modern era is shifting from a singular logo, uniform design, and colors to a far more wide ranging spectrum of marketability. Even schools like Texas, Alabama, and Michigan are wearing alternate pro combat uniforms and taking on new designs and shifting color schemes. It is actually a very good thing for a school like the UofM where it is becoming much easier to pick from a slew of unique and flashy designs, colors, and images to create excitement and recognition for the school.
Yes, follow the crowd & do what everybody else is doing. That's always the best advice in all facets of life.
Surely, you realize how ridiculous that extrapolation is...
