FlorInternational @ RiceOwls Friday Game Thread
Everybody all around the world
Gotta tell you what I just heard
There's going to be a party all over the world...
All over the world
Everybody's got the word
Everybody everywhere is gonna feel it tonight!

Going with a bit of an international theme as we get ramped up for tonight's ballgame. A lot of good things could happen tonight, let's leave it at that...

Go Rice Owls!

It's an early start in the middle of Tennessee. USM strands two in T1, and I begin to wonder if we will have won CUSA by the time our game begins...

For 20% chance of rain it sure looks grey a mile from Reckling at 3:20 PM though the rain we had earlier has stopped. The ground is soaked.

Any truth to the rumors that Wade Townsend's pitching tonight for Rice?? Though I hear he's on a strict 300 pitch limit.

The Blraiders strike first, scoring one in B2 (after what appears to have been a rain delay). MTSU has two doubles in the inning and is still at-bat. Let's go, Eaglets!

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Dalkowski.
Steve Dalkowski:
This guy threatened to throw over 200 pitches in a game many times. I saw him throw near a hundred pitches in a three inning stint once in 1960. It was class C baseball in Fresno, Cal but class C was pretty good in those days. if you put him on a 300 pitch limit I would believe it. If you don't have time to read the wiki, more than once he struck out 18 and walked 18 in the same game. Surprisingly he was an alcoholic.

Surprisingly? Based on his chosen position, maybe not so much...

USM storms back in T3 with a single, double, and triple. Now 4-1 Eaglets, and they're still batting for the cycle in the inning.

Guys, with all due respect, USM already did their job. Let's not rely on backing in to a championship. Let's go out there tonight (and tomorrow afternoon) and win this thing outright by taking the final regular season series. It will leave somewhat of a bad taste in our mouths if we do anything less.

BTW, I don't know if anyone is going to be able to stop USM on their home turf next week. If they win today, it will be 12 straight wins, and they're doing it very, very impressively. Their pitching has notched a team record 9 shutouts I believe...they always have a very strong defense...and they're really starting to hit of late.

Not me!

Look, obviously we all want to win all our games, and we all hope to win tonight, tomorrow, and eternally ad infinitum forever and ever amen.

But I care more about keeping the streak alive, but any means necessary. Even if it comes at the hands of Malcolm X or Jean-Paul Sartre.

I don't recall how we won each of the 19 consecutive championships thus far. Some were season championships. Some were tournament championships. Some were shared. I don't recall, and I don't care. For recruiting, for bragging rights, for OG lore, I just want the streak to continue.

Don't get too proud, my friend. Le streak. C'est chic.

Still raining here inside the loop about 2 miles SW of campus. Radar doesn't look too promising for the next couple of hours.

Two more doubles for MTSU in B3, and they narrow USM's lead to 4-3. That's 4 of their 5 hits as two-baggers. Headed to T4. Let's go, Eagles!

EDIT: BOOM! There it is. Roussel with his second homer of the series, and the Eagles complete the cycle before their first out in the 4th. 5-3 USM.

EDIT: Another double and a single makes it 6-3 USM. MTSU going to their bullpen with no outs and one Eagle on the tree.

EDIT: And one more single and RBI before USM is done in T4. Now 7-3 Eagles going B4. Great job, fellas. Much obliged.

Amazing how this shifted so quickly. Through 3 games plus 8.5 innings, Rice appeared to be trending up enough to at least get back into the discussion for a regional. After the meltdown against Houston and the complete no-show against FIU yesterday, Rice is now perilously close to ending a schizophrenic campaign on a very sour note.

We're lucky that USM didn't get hot until they did, because with a couple more wins they too would be pushing us for the title now.

Coach Graham and the guys have to get it sorted here quick, because we're in danger of pulling a vintage Joe Cocker: stumbling onto the big stage.

Live shots of accident on 59 @ Hillcroft show fairly heavy rain. Avoid 59 coming in to the game ...assuming it goes off.
