Importance of buyouts
Anybody remember the thread from long ago on the importance of how to structure a buyout? It came up after Florida hired Colorado State's football coach. Here's the update:

Yea that was one smart AD.

Example of a not smart AD - Billy Donovan only had a 500k buyout

Or Comper reducing Doerens Buyout by $100k while giving him a raise.

RE: Importance of buyouts
It's not necessarily true that Florida was not smart in the buyout. Like all other aspects of the contract buyout is negotiable and some coaches may not accept a contract with a large buyout. Certainly Billy Donovan had a lot of leverage any contract extension talks

Billy Donovan probably wanted that since he toyed with the idea of going to the NBA. My sense is that buyouts get reduced for coaches with longer tenure all the time, which would be the case here. Don't take everything for face value, the essence of every deal is different depending on what each party values more. There is usually give and take on both sides and neither gets exactly what they want. I have an MBA and own my own company so I know this to be true just about every time I have to negotiate something from doing business in general to hiring people, no deal is ever the same.

Only looking at the buyout is silly. Yes, of course you'd want a high buyout, but you'd also want a lower salary, lower bonuses, easier university buyout if firing, options, etc...it's negotiating all the parts together.
