Finally, someone else who shares my utter disdain for this ludicrous term! 
I don't care whether it's journalistic laziness, an attempt to simplify an event's name into a 'headline-ready" format, an attempt to ensure that every scandal's name serves as a reminder to what some consider the ultimate scandal (and in so doing, perhaps perpetuate a negative image of the party whose members perpetrated the incident), or some other reason, I wish it would just stop. Unfortunately, it's a permanent fixture now.
