That will signal that there is going to be a good 7-10 years before any realignment happens. ESPN has a history of trying to negotiate early, so we may very well not have to wait till 2019 to get a contract. I tend to think ESPN may throw an extension at us in 2018. I hope we sign only a 7 year again, which would lineup perfectly with the Big 12s contract.
What I am afraid of is that ESPN goes cheap and wants to extend for $3-4 million and we turn them down and go to market... last time we messed with them, only three of us were left. I hope like crazy they send us something we are happy to sign... and I would be thrilled if they would help facilitate a move of some MWC teams and/or BYU into our conference.
Hell, throw us $5 million a piece and help move BYU, CSU, Air Force and Boise into our conference and I am perfectly fine signing until 2024/25. Its not Big Money, but were alive and strong.
If they try to nickle-and-dime us like that, we'd be best to tell 'em to kick rocks and come back in year 5 (or 6?) and talk to us again.
IMO, there should be two digits per team ($10M minimum) before we seriously consider any offer from those a-holes. They screwed us before and I see fans hoping they screw us again. $5m per team.......SMFH!!
Dude, you're insane if you think we should tell ESPN to piss off. Do you not remember what happened last time?
Ill refreshen your memory... we used to have this really cool conference called the Big East. Nobody was looking to take any of our teams and everything was pretty settled. The big 12 had lost Nebraska and Colorado but was stable at 10 (from what most people thought...the instability came a little later)
After YEARS of debate, the C7 had finally agreed to allow football to go to 9 and possibly 10. TCU, who was a very attractive candidate had agreed to come on board.
We start negotiations with ESPN and tell them to kick sand when they offered us about $10 million a year. Meatball goes on a tour telling everyone how we can do better and that were going to market.
All of a sudden, the ACC gets real interested in expansion. Nobody else had expanded. They had no real need to and the amount of extra money they got was minimal... but for some crazy reason they take Pitt and Cuse. Two teams they could have had years ago and could have grabbed way later... but for some mysterious reason they needed them...NOW.
Shortly after all of this Boston College comes out and admits that ESPN guided them as to who to take.
Now, do you REALLY want to screw with Mickey Mouse again. Cause that rat really screwed us last time. If we had said yes, our conference would be pretty much the same as it was...maybe minus TCU and would be making considerably more.
