I don't know them. I do know in all the years I've lived in this majority African-American city, no one has ever corrected me...but yeah, I'm sure you guys know what's best, and will proceed to tell me ALL about it, lol

Right after college I waited tables. A guy I worked with was a black African American. He took offense to black American people calling themselves African American. He even flipped out on a table of black people who made a comment about "us African Americans need to stick together". His response was "what part of Africa are you from?"

I hate hyphenated names. It's un-American.

It would also be a pain in the a$$ to me because I'd be a German-English-Dutch-Finnish-Swedish-Norwegian American.

Nah. I think I will now get offended when people call me white. I should be called Irish/English American.

This African-American/black distinction is stupid. It also happens to bring out another stupid argument: whether or not black people should be called on thing or the other.

Being black, I've never once heard anyone offended over either term. Some people are going to say black, some people are going to say African American. I'm not the biggest fan of African-American but, if I hear it, it doesn't offend me. It just happens to stick out like a sore thumb.

We all know, for all intents and purposes, what African-American means in our vernacular, who it refers to, and why it is this way.

I think you meant "I doubt the majority of them have even been on an airplane". Unless of course you meant that you think the majority of black people HAVE in fact being on an airplane and well-traveled, which seems unlikely, given the fact that you are you.

Now with all this being said, I don't think there has been a time where I was knowingly set I aside like the case in the OP. It happens but I don't have any anecdotes.

Even most of my wife's people don't do that after spending time in the Caribbean.

The only thing that comes close, and it is only remotely so, is the time an older lady asked why we would want to marry someone outside of our races. I didn't say anything but she did.
