Check your white privilege before spouting such offensive nonsense.

got that sarcasm....well done....

I think I'm going to read to my future children - and only because I want to give them an academic advantage over his competitors in the classroom.

That is the problem. Why should your child be able to even grasp the concept of "Dada" when most other kids don't.

You spelled "privilege" wrong. It's p r i v i l e g e, not a d v a n t a g e.

RE: Reading to children at bedtime
Not that I agree with what the guy is saying but if you read what he actually said then you see that it's not that bad.

Quote:You have to allow parents to engage in bedtime stories activities, in fact we encourage them because those are the kinds of interactions between parents and children that do indeed foster and produce these [desired] familial relationship goods...We could prevent elite private schooling without any real hit to healthy family relationships, whereas if we say that you can’t read bedtime stories to your kids because it’s not fair that some kids get them and others don’t, then that would be too big a hit at the core of family life.

Essentially his work is saying that the family unit and all that it entails such as bedtime stories, playing sports, meals around the table etc. are more important for the child's growth than things like private school. I think most here would agree with that.

Now is it a loving and caring parent's responsibility to 'check their privilege' because other kids don't get the same sort of relationship? In my opinion emphatically no.

Quote:I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally.

This is where I disagree because you doing your best for your child is not unfairly disadvantaging other people's children it is fairly advantaging your children and it's not your responsibility to feel guilty for other people who don't go to the lengths that you do. Clearly there will be some cases where parents are unable to offer some of these advantages to their kids, an easy example would be if they have to work late to put food on the table. If that's the case then it's not the job of parents that can to 'check their privilege' but lessons learned from this kind of research can be incorporated into the education system. I think it's the job of individual parents to make it an unlevel playing field, as long as they do it legally.

I think it is a parent's job to disadvantage other children.

In his white priv La-Z boy nonetheless, in his "sons" room. Sorry, you just said he's barely old enough to pick out his own books, I'm QUITE certain he hasn't self identified as a "boy" yet!

You are CLEARLY the type of personification of ALL that is wrong with this world. You need to check yourself!
