OT: May Madness!
May Madness is underway! The bracket was announced yesterday, and the top four seeds are Notre Dame, Syracuse, North Carolina and Denver:

It all culminates in the final on Memorial Day -- and the 11th annual Houston area watch party for said final:

Fans of all types are welcome.

The tournament actually started with a play-in game tonight between Towson and High Point. And it's a good one: 6-5 at the half.

The play-in games are done, so the 16-team bracket is now complete. Eight games this weekend (four Saturday, four Sunday), all on ESPNU:

The traditional powers are there, and also some up-and-comers like Ohio State, Albany, Marist and Colgate.
Three teams (Ohio State, #1 seed Notre Dame and #4 seed Denver) are from west of the Appalachians.
Plus there are three Ivy League teams in the field (Cornell, Brown and Yale) -- I'm not sure if that's a first, but it's certainly a rarity.

RE: OT: May Madness!
It has been a tournament of upsets and near upsets so far: of the top eight seeds, three (Duke, Virginia and Cornell) were knocked off by sizable margins, two (Notre Dame and Maryland) narrowly escaped defeat, and three (Denver, North Carolina and Syracuse) play later today.

Perhaps the most surprising of the upsets belongs to Ohio State, who beat #5 seed Duke 16-11.

RE: OT: May Madness!
Last week in Denver they had to scrape snow off the field in order to play. Today the first quarterfinal was delayed an hour by lightning. It is now 9-all early in the 4t quarter between #1 Notre Dame and Albany. Immediately afterward it's Ohio State v #4 Denver. Both are on ESPNU.

Sunday in Annapolis, it's longtime rivals Johns Hopkins v #2 Syracuse, and followed by Maryland v #3 North Carolina. Sunday's games are on ESPN2.

A nice article -- including some insightful quotes 03-wink -- on Monday's NCAA championship party in Houston:

Conveniently, it's right after the baseball selection show. :)
