After Knox's first piece on al.com the Tide trolls did their best to belittle John. I wish that I had the following information then:

Dr. John Knox is an associate professor of geography at the University of Georgia and the 2014 CASE/Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Professor of the Year for the state of Georgia. He is a native of Birmingham and a 1988 graduate of UAB

You can add what was at the bottom of the Crimson and White articles. "He is a 1988 summa *** laude graduate of UAB in mathematics and a 1987 Rhodes Scholar finalist."

**edit** ROFL at the bad word filter.

The SGA of UA has always been a training ground for state politicians. The school, even into the 21st century has reflected the values of the ruling classes of this state. It was explained to us in 1960 that ROTC units existed at UA because of the antebellum tradition as a military school rather than required as in a "Land grant" school like Auburn.

In the antebellum period it was the Planter Class. After that , it reflected the blending of that group with the newly arrived industrial "Barons" like those of B'ham. These ruling groups have always played the poor whites against the Negroes to keep them fighting each other leaving them to run the state to their liking.

That is why the state's tax system has the bottom 60% paying 10+% of their income in taxes while the top 5% pays 3% to 5% of theirs. All new taxes proposed by the leadership so far in Montgomery are designed along these same parameters.

If you're on Twitter, go blow that article up. Weld is doing us a huge favor by tweeting it often today, and if it gets a lot of clicks and comments, they may want to explore the issue further.
