Perhaps he's afraid the Temple guy would lobby for our basketball to be added to AAC. Oh, the horror.

I believe he meant the conference that they came from, A-10.

I like him, but frankly I like all three, based on what we see here.
A good friend of mine has a lot of ties to temple, football in particular. On more than one occasion he has told me that temple and UAB face a very similar set of circumstances. it isn't like temple is selling out every game, even though they are in a city that size.
Very similar.
From Wikipedia
Quote:In 2013, Temple announced the school would eliminate the following seven athletic teams: Softball, baseball, women's rowing, men's rowing (a non-NCAA sport), men's gymanstics, and both men's indoor and outdoor track and field. The school said they no longer chose to field 24 teams and cited Title IX, facility needs, and student welfare. Several months after that announcement, the city of Philadelphia agreed to pay for the renovation of Temple's former boathouse, leading Temple to immediately reinstate rowing as a varsity sport for both sexes.

I believe the Senior Ass. AD at Temple prior to this guy was Herman "Gold Medal Stupid" Frazier. So he should know about cleaning up after an utter dumb ass.

I wonder if the three finalists were leaked to make it harder for Watts to force a hire outside of the finalists?

I think Mackin looks very foolish for stepping down and signing the NDS. He took the money and ran. If you are being threatened come forward. Otherwise you are simply a coward.
Your post looks foolish to me, as Mackin refused to pull the trigger on killing the sports and was canned. The money he took is called providing for your family until you can get another job. I'm sure Brian will have his say at some point, but it won't be on your or my schedule.
And unlike you, I won't get into the name calling, as it's counter productive.

BINGO
Finalists usually aren't secret when there's a committee like this involved. I doubt this was a "leak". It was intentionally released.

There's a lot of speculation & spin that could be applied to this, but one thing I know for certain: Watts accepting an AD with a football backgroud will keep the headlines and speculation off of him during this stage of decision-making.

+1 AB. Sometimes it hurts to come to terms with what really happened. When he drove around on his golf cart at the FIU game and solemnly thanked our tailgate group for coming, I should've known.

Not to make this thread about Brian, but I've also known him since before he was AD, and I will say again I believe he behaved very honorably in a very difficult situation. He could still be the AD at UAB, but could not stomach what has been going on. It is difficult to and I don't believe we should judge anyone, and we will never ever know what all went on. I know this though, no one invested more of their heart and soul into UAB than Brian Mackin, ever.
That's all I got to say about that.

And Watts would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling freeuab kids.
This is so great!

I agree with you and Attalla. I didn't know him as long as you guys have, but I do know Brian bleeds a deeper green than I do and he is an honorable man. I know he was a huge supporter of the football program and he fought off and tried to out maneuvered the certain Trustees within the rules of the game for years. We may never know exactly what happened behind closed doors, but people don't turn into cowards over night.
The fact that he is no longer AD, and I feel sure that he still could be if he had supported Watts, tells me all I need to know. The fact that he walked away with only a half years salary is also telling. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere nice.

Way more likely that the chair of the committee released the names to counter the Joe Dean Jr. piece that made it appear he didn't get the job BECAUSE he supported bringing back football (which is BS anyway).

In hindsight, yes. I don't think Mackin expected Watts to be so ... daft.
