Baseball Preview: #22 Diamond Hawks Host #23 Tar Heels On Wednesday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks return to Brooks Field for the lone home game over a nine-game stretch on Wednesday when they host North Carolina. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

UNCW improved to 11-1 in the CAA and 28-8 overall with a sweep at Hofstra last weekend. The Seahawks also pushed their winning streak to a season-high 10 games. It's their longest winning streak since the 2008 club that set a school-record with a 21-game winning streak.

The Tar Heels upped their record to 25-15 with an 8-3 win over visiting Campbell on Tuesday. UNC stands at 10-10 in the ACC after splitting a pair of games with Virginia Tech.

Both programs rank in the top-30 nationally in RPI with the Seahawks sitting at 24th and the Tar Heels at 25.

Junior Evan Phillips will make the start for UNCW while UNC counters with freshman lefthander Hunter Williams.

The Seahawks return to the road and conference play this weekend when they visit CAA newcomer Elon for a three-game series that opens on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Forgot that Skye Bolt is only a Junior. He's hitting .286 this year with 5 HR, 28 RBI and 5 stolen bases in 140 AB's. He was a more prominent base stealer as a Freshman but is showing more power these days. Everyone else on the roster seems pretty unfamiliar to me.

Also just a note that we were ranked 22nd by D1Baseball.com. UNC was ranked 23rd by Baseball America.

Damn right. The last time they came to Brooks Field (Apr 3, 2013) they whooped us 10-0. Later that season we beat them in Chapel Hill when they were # 1, but it's been a long time since we've beaten them at Brooks Field. 1996 was the last time, I believe.

Yep. 6 nice RPI games in a row begin tonight, with all 4 teams we face located in the Carolinas. # 23 UNC, @ # 133 Elon, # 37 Coastal, # 90 Campbell.

In fact, the FURTHEST travel games remaining on our schedule are Charleston and Elon. The rest are at home or 2 hour roadtrips.

Whine & cheesers starting a lefty tonight. No surprise. For the first time in a while we have lots of good hitting from the left side. We need the righties to be on tonight (keep the hot bat going Casey).

The lefty Proff speaks of is Hunter Williams, who has been mostly un-hittable as a freshman this year. Thru 9 appearances and 6 starts he's 4-1 with a 1.14 ERA, .155 Opponent batting average, 30 K's and 15 walks in 31.2 innings.

Last night, after having Sunday's game against VT cancelled, UNC used weekend starter Benton Moss. Thus their primary midweek guy was available tonight.

And we probably can't rely on weak relievers from them. Thus far when we get to an opposing team's bullpen we can take advantage but tonight may be different. Lets break out on top & keep it going.

Indeed. Trevor Kelley for them in particular has been very dependable, and while their bullpen depth isn't quite as good as past UNC teams, they have 3 or 4 other guys they can turn to with confidence.

It also pretty much goes without saying that we'll need Evan Phillips to have his best outing of the season; this isn't NC Central. Just as we can't depend on getting after their bullpen like we're used to, we can't depend on our bullpen shutting them down for 5+ innings.

Phillips allows the first 2 on as base runners, a pop up squeezed by McDowell is the 2nd out. However Dunbar for UNC knocks in 2 with a single. 2-0, UNC still batting in the 1st.
