Big Day for St John's on Monday
Just saw this:
http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.c...-st-johns/

Brandon Sampson who was a St John's commit, then re-opened his commitment when Lavin was let go- will decide tomorrow.

Crucial that St John's gets him back in the fold. St John's absolutely needs to get at least him or Cheick Diallo. And I would say that they have a far better chance at Sampson compared to Diallo.

RE: Big Day for St John's on Monday
it was a big weekend for lavin and friends. Sampson was gonna go to SMU to meet with larry brown but canceled to receive the sju delegation instead. they also met with diallo. And now mustapha heron has decommitted from Pitt and it sounds like sju is the frontrunner. Also, Mullin officially made an offer to Rawle Alkins. the latter two are 2016 recruits

um, you mean Mullin and friends(I know how strange it is to say that!)...

Will be real interesting to see if they can get Sampson. It's as close to a must get as you can have imo.

whoops, was typing that as Penny Dreadful was starting. And yeah, if they can get him, I believe some dominoes will start to fall

Brandon Sampson going to LSU. It's fine, when you're a sju fan you get used to disappointment

ouch. Don't think there's a chance now they get Diallo.

Going to be a tough 1st year for Mullin I think.

RE: Big Day for St John's on Monday
Look, St Johns' recruiting network and relationships with CHSAA high schools have been shredded for almost 20 years. It's not going to be rebuilt in a week.

Realistically, we're not trying to built a NYC version of Calipari's Kentucky. A college program is built on a lot of guys who aren't going to the NBA. If Mullin can bring in a steady stream of quality "team players", that's how you become a tournament fixture.

The thing I think's going to happen IMO is St John's rebuilding relationships with those schools will in turn help improve those programs as well. So that'll help things out a lot...

Wrong Stever. De La Rosa was likely shown the door by Mullin, to free up the roster spot. Last year when he came in as a freshman he was so out of shape that Lavin had to hold him out of the preseason exhibition games. That doesn't say much for an incoming freshman to be in such poor playing condition, even though significant playing minutes would likely be available. All of Mullins recent frontcourt additions are considered an upgrade over De La Rosa.

While losing Sampson was a disappointment, it was not all that surprising, considering the new staff only had a couple of weeks to win him back. He went with the home town team (LSU), which also has what many feel is the top incoming class in the nation. But try as you may to put a negative spin on what has happened lately at St. John's, anyone with the least bit of objectivity would acknowledge that Mullin has by far exceeded everyone's expectations to date. Lavin left behind a train wreck, and Mullin has made many key additions that bode well for the future. Deep down, even you must know that.

RE: Big Day for St John's on Monday
I've said on here that Mullin has done a great job with what he's got- that he's done more in a month at St John's than Lavin did in his entire time there. this year is going to be brutal for St John's. They have Jordan, Obekpa, and that's about it. It's why I think it's such a pipedream to get Diallo. That's just the reality of the situation. Long term, it's going to be as good for St John's as it's been in ages. But short term, not so much(and something I think all St John's fans knew was coming).

Again, I think you're premature in assuming this season will be a disaster. It did look horrible when the season ended, and Jordon and Obekpa were expected to leave. Lavin had done such a poor job of restocking the roster that it looked like he'd have to go to the student cafeteria to recruit enough players for a team.

But look where things stand now. Jordon and Obekpa are back. Four star guard Marcus Lovett recently tweeted St John's is the leading candidate for him. Many analysts are predicting Diallo will also wind up at St John's. Put those four in the starting rotation along with Williams/Sima, and you have a pretty solid starting five, with some good complimentary players on the bench. Will they get both Diallo and Lovett? Who knows. But lets wait and see what happens before you go ahead and bury them for next season.

RE: Big Day for St John's on Monday
I think it would be a HUGE upset for St John's to get Diallo. Even if they got Lovett- St John's would be a fringe NCAA tourney team with Diallo. I don't think a guy who will be a 1 and done would want that. From what I've read- Kentucky and Kansas are much more likely.

What is strange about Lovett- he did list St John's and Memphis as his top 2 right now- but his pictures are Illinois and UNLV.

I think it's far more likely they don't get either than they get both.

RE: Big Day for St John's on Monday
just saw Diallo going to Kansas:
No. 7 recruit commits to Kansas
Cheick Diallo told ESPN's Paul Biancardi that he felt Kansas was the best place for him: "I can earn playing time right away. I played against Joel Embiid in high school and watched his development. I need to work on a lot of things and feel Coach Self can help my game."

If St John's can be like Marquette/Creighton were this year- that would be a good year for them. Anything more is probably just gravy.

RE: Big Day for St John's on Monday
well Jordan is gone now.

St John's will be pretty poor this year. They have a brutal OOC schedule. Long term they're going to be really good but next year if they can win even 10 games it's going to be a good season. Think it'll be similar to the year that Lavin was out.

is it me or is it crazy that Obekpa is going to UNLV? He had problems staying on the straight and narrow at St John's, and he's going to get better in Las Vegas???
