I'm graduating a week from Saturday, and if he speaks or is shaking hands, I'll make sure I do my part to make it ugly.

Props to you. And to any other student who does the same. My hope is that the crowd does not get involved however, as those wanting to treat this as a normal graduation ceremony can do so when it is their time.

I'm still mad about shaking hands and smiling with this clown at my graduation 03-banghead03-banghead.. This was a couple of years before any of this had gone down though

IMO ultimate protest would be for everyone to walk up w/ a blue bottle in hand & walk past him not shaking his hand (nor Lucas's) & but shake others hands. Quiet & everyone gets to walk but message clearly sent

I think many here prefer to act ignorant as Watts has done. Forget the "two wrongs don't make a right" analogy.

How about carrying a #FREE UAB bumper sticker and handing it to him on stage.

Watts won't hand out diplomas just like last time. Too bad Provost Lucas has made an arse of herself lately. I wonder if she will be regretting that when graduation day is here.

Which is most likely what's going to happen. People thinking about something crazy happening at graduation are fooling themselves.

I hope so. There are plenty of events and times for protest. Graduation ceremonies are not one of them. Making a fool of yourself makes them the winners.

I would settle for them just forcing Watts not to attend.

Personally I would hope that subdued yet pointed protests are done at graduation. Don't fsck up someone's 4+ years of work by shouting at Ray Watts from the stands. Students should bring in small footballs to hand him, or honestly hand whoever is doing the hand shaking. Leave them on the table in front of him. That would be more powerful, and would take away any ammunition from the administration to say "see, look at these people, no respect for their fellow graduates"

RE: ABC 33/40 asked Watts about the legislation to expand the board
Most likely, he will just sit and not talk like in December, or not show at all like he did the Graduate School Commencement in December. IF he does show up for one (that's a big IF) I would expect a response from students this time around. We have had 5 months to hate Watts where as last fall, they only had, what, a couple of weeks? I am glad I won't be graduating this semester though. I don't want Ray Watts's name on my diploma. Luckily my first one reads Carol Garrison. If we still have Watts in 2017, I will be asking someone else to sign a diploma for me. I have already reached out to Martin Sheen, but no response as of yet.

There shouldn't be anything happen from the stands but anything the students want to do should be fair game. If I were a student I would refuse to shake his hand. I would turn my back to him if he decides to try and speak. I love the small football idea too but the audience needs to be silent. Unless of course the majority of grads are making noise. In that case they probably wouldn't mind the help. Whatever happens, if anything happens, needs to be led by the grads.

I agree that a any formal protesting that disrupts the graduation ceremonies should be avoided it at all possible. Whatever is done should come from the students and only those students graduating (turn their back, water bottles in hand, mini footballs, etc...).

As a current teacher I attended the HS I teach at graduation ceremonies last spring. Our athletic graduates 'pranked' our principal by handing him a small pin/coin while shaking hands. Our principal of course had nowhere to put it except his pocket in order to shake the next hand. After about the 25th person to participate, you could start to tell how full his pockets were becoming and our assistant principal/athletic director had to step in and help collect these souvenirs :) not sure if/how many audience members caught on, but the faculty around me...we were dying trying to hold our laughter in.

Something to this effect (handing Watts mini footballs) would be FANTASTIC to see!!

But the decision should be up to those who are graduating whether to participate in any shenanigans or not.
