The same reason teams wear jerseys that make you barf and play on fields that blind you. Fans love it, recruits love it and it's something not often done. Notre Dame would play in or on the grass outside of the Notre Dame church in Paris it's named for if they could. They'd play right next to Lake Michigan with a lady watching if the gimmick marketed the program well enough (please ND's AD don't be reading this, I don't wanna give you any ideas).

He built a log cabin there and proclaimed his fledging school "Our Lady of The Lake" after the Virgin Mary and the " lake" nearby.

Or in his native French: "Notre Dame du Lac", the official name of the school.
