RE: KScope Letter to the Editor: Don't Fire Watts
He's right, and his opinions mirror some that I saw on the forum. If Dr. Watts was fired, an interim president would be appointed, and, after a fair amount of stalling with no decisions being rescinded, a new president would be appointed by the board that is "one hundred percent behind the decisions made by his predecessor even if he wasn't a fan of how they played out."

I believe it's true that is how it'll play out as long as UAB doesn't have the autonomy to protect and promote itself. He was always right about the leverage we collectively have. However, you can't operate on the basis that Dr. Watts means well by UAB because we have proof to the contrary. We can't even extend our leverage to ensuring the group he proposes wouldn't be tampered with. I mean, we can look at the task force and understand that much.

This discussion is unfortunately moot. It is not we can decide whether the Watts stays or goes, whether such a new "committee" described is formed (it won't be) or whether the disbanded sports are returned or not. In fact none of us have any say as to the future of UAB in any respect. That is actually the whole point.

Our only option is to change rules of the game and the only way we can do that is in Montgomery.

This is were Wes Smith was a few steps ahead of the game. His Athletic Task Force is independent of the President.

But as we've seen in the rejection of OSKR, it's not really as independent as you think

And Wes Smith interviewed Bill Carr as well. Technically Watts as head of UAB can deny contracts with UAB. But, the Task Force is still independent of the President.

In theory. OSKR showed that there were hard limits to that "independence".

Do you think Watts wanted them to interview Carr and find out the decision was reached in August? Immediately after the PR documents were leaked, Watts claimed they were simply planning for all contingencies (quiet the laughable excuse), but then later that week we learn Bill Carr had reached his decision and notified Watts before the PR firm was hired. The Task Force is working independently of Watts if they weren't we would have never found that out.
