Charlie Sumner Passes Away
W&M lost one of its football greats today with the passing of Charlie Sumner, quarterback/defensive back...he played both ways---on Indian teams of the early 1950s, including the fabled "Iron Indians" of 1953.
He was 84 years old.

Sumner also returned punts and kickoffs for those teams and also was the team's punter. He played six years in the NFL as a defensive back for the Bears and Vikings, making All-Pro one season. He was a great defensive coach for years in the NFL...earning three Super Bowl rings as a defensive coach and then defensive coordinator for John Madden's great Oakland teams.

Sumner was elected to the William and Mary Sports Hall of Fame and The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Charlie was big for a defensive back in his day.

He was also a great golfer. He was a head coach in the USFL also. Quite a distinguished member of our Tribe Alumni.
