Really hoping grant doesn't go back to VCU. You can bet he'd get his current class there. Grant going unhired and Bama continuing to get rejected is our best hope to get Ingram.

RE: "Alabama's option is right up the road"
Coach's connection with North Carolina has been a major asset to UAB and he has played that card well. Right at the moment it might be in our favor and against coach.

Why UNC is under investigation for an "academic" athletic scandal.
Coach every other year was in charge of administrative operations which included academics. there is no hint of any direct involvement by coach.

however anyone doing their due diligence might have temporary reservations. But who knows but Pearl Tydall and Howland have all been hired

You are assuming that major colleges athletics care about academics more than just lip service. The reason Haase hasn't got a lot of looks is that he hasn't won enough yet, not any perceived connections to any academic scandal.

Auburn hired Bruce Pearl while he was still under a "show cause" cloud which expired during his first year. As long as the UNC situation continues under a discovery phase, it is likely any coach will come under scrutiny until the entire scandal is understood.

Pearl was considered to be a sure enough winner to make his hire worth the risk. Haase has not won enough to reach that plateau of being worth the potential risk to major programs.

Pearl's show cause expired several months before the season started. He was hired with foreknowledge that it would be expiring. It's not like they hired him in spite of it.

Pearl's case at the time Auburn hired him was one of finite knowledge. There was a feeling that all was known that could be known. The UNC scandal is still in the discovery phase with the possibility of "new rocks to be turned over" or new information to be found out. Until it too reaches that finite stage of full knowledge, all persons involved may have an informal cloud over them.

The only cloud I have heard over Haase's head is coming from Blazer fans.

Yep. Assistants aren't generally slammed with show causes as far as I'm aware.

And there isn't **** to turn over at UNC, they ncaa knows what they did. But slamming UNC isn't good for the brand.

Actually, Pearl's assistants were hit with show causes, and their biggest sin was following Pearl's orders and covering for him. Steve Forbes was just hired as head coach as Murry Bartow's replacement.

And CJH is currently in the b'ham airport, for those that want to obsessively track him. At least we know he doesn't sit thru every Final4 like its a job fair (like a previous coach)(and yes, I know he was there)

Hope he isn't recruiting. It's a dead period. Maybe spending some of that big raise on a well deserved vacation.

Sounds solid to me.

The only con I can think of is that some guys have a tough transition to college from professional because of recruiting, but Johnson strikes me as someone with the kind of personality that will do well in that regard.

If Battle lands him, then I think he would have definitely one upped his counterpart at Auburn.

The "talking heads" on CBS Sports seem very impressed by the hiring of Avery Johnson and indicated it was comparable to UKY hiring Calipari. Not being an NBA fan, I have to take their word on that.

It'd be a impressive hire.

It's no Larry Brown kind of hire, but Johnson did make it to the NBA finals once. I don't know about comparing it to Calipari because we knew he could both recruit and coach at the college level before he went to Kentucky. I'd expect him to do better than Grant, but it's easy to say stuff like that right now.

The thread is where it should be. Why can't you post this over there?

Definitely a solid hire. Doesn't mean it will be the right hire but you definitely cannot question his success in the NBA. I'm sure Avery will use that as a recruiting tool.

After his first full season as NBA head coach (where he inherited Dirk Nowitzki) Avery Johnson:

Was either bounced in the 1st round or didn't make the playoffs at all

Fired from both the Mavericks and Nets

Has never coached/recruited at the college level

Short of package deal including Dirk Nowitzki this is a questionable hire for Alabama-Tuscaloosa
