RE: Men's Lacrosse Hits 70th Team
One of my friends actually wrestled for Cleveland State, not that long ago. It's a shame they couldn't find a way to continue funding, but at least they didn't outright drop it. The real question is where will CSU play? America East or CAA look to be the only realistic options.

America East (7) - Albany, Binghamton, Hartford, UMBC, UMass-Lowell, Stony Brook, Vermont
Atlantic Coast (5) - Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia
Big East (6) - Denver, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Villanova
Big Ten (6) - Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers
Colonial Athletic (6) - Delaware, Drexel, Fairfield, Hofstra, UMass, Towson
Independent (1) - NJIT
Ivy (7) - Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Yale
MAAC (7) - Canisius, Detroit Mercy, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Quinnipiac, Siena
Northeast (7) - Bryant, Hobart, Mt. St. Mary's, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph's, Wagner
Patriot (9) - Army, Navy, Boston U, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola (MD)
Southern (8) - Air Force, Bellarmine, Furman, High Point, Jacksonville, Mercer, Richmond, VMI

Detroit Mercy and Cleveland State would still need some help to form a truly regional conference.

Cleveland State sponsors men's soccer but does not have baseball, track teams or men's cross country. Interesting.

The MAAC or Northeast look like decent fits.

Yeah, I'd say NEC, but it depends on how CSU will scholarship players. My understanding is the NEC is pretty small in terms of scholarship numbers, MAAC's a bit more significant, CAA even more robust, and SoCon is sort of all over the place.

None of those would surprise me, but I'd suspect they're NEC or SoCon-bound.

Wish Texas State would pick up Men's Lacrosse. Our club team has been pretty salty lately.

All of those schools are private. Of course if NJIT to the NEC happens (although I think America East is more likely), that won't be much of an issue.

All of the NEC's lacrosse members are private, but CCSU isn't a private school, and in the past, the NEC's had Towson, UMBC, and Baltimore, as well as other public schools, current and previously, in other affiliate capacities. I don't think CSU will kick up as much fuss there as, say, MAAC, where only VMI and Albany park a program or two, but I don't think much of CSU's chances there, Detroit or no.

Envisioned Cleveland State being a hockey school. But, seems there is no 5-10,000 rink in the Cleveland area. Quicken Loans arena is available, but that's much too big.

College baseball, lacrosse, and hockey are all becoming more popular.

Someone could earn a Ph.D. explaining the reason(s) why.

I believe Fairfield is leaving the Colonial and moving their lacrosse team to the MAAC where they are a full member for all other sports. NJIT and/or Cleveland St could end up in the CAA for lacrosse. However, NJIT is looking for a home for all their sports with interest in the NEC or American East who would be their first preference. If NJIT ended up in one of them, then either the CAA or the conference that didn't take NJIT, could take Cleveland St.

Where did you hear that about Fairfield? They left the MAAC for lacrosse years ago over conference commitment and competitiveness. They began play in the CAA (a vastly superior lacrosse conference than the MAAC) this season after the ECAC folded. I would be shocked if Fairfield would place lacrosse back in the MAAC.

I doubt the CAA would be looking to add any more schools beyond the 6 needed for the AQ. It would be doubtful that they would look towards such young programs even if it needed to replace a defecting team.

Maybe CSU can find a home in the MAAC eventually if Detroit is still there (although it has enough schools for the AQ).

NJIT best hope would seem to be the AE or NEC although neither are in need for another school.

Surprised that Cleveland didn't add women's Lacrosse first since it satisfies title 9 requirements. Would have given Wrestling more time to get their finances together

Would it matter if the scholarship numbers don't match? I think its 12 WLax and 9.9 Wrestling.

I just wonder if wrestling as a sport is just an easy target for financials. Heck, people tried to remove it from the Olympics!

By dropping funding for wrestling, Cleveland State essentially didn't add anything from a funding standpoint.

Fairfield's trying to wiggle their way into CAA entirely, and not just through lacrosse. They aren't moving lacrosse back into MAAC.

You also have a chance to get some publicity in Lax. The only time you hear anything about wrestling is the finals.

Reading the article it appears that Cleveland St. is trying to use Lacrosse to attract more suburban kids to their school and to get away from the commuter school image.

It won't surprise me if individual competition sports are one day completely de-emphasized in college athletics.

For the most part they don't generate revenue and in these sports the best of the best have great opportunities to compete either in the Olympics or professional competitions/organizations.

For Olympic sports, that's wrestling, swimming, track, gymnastics, rowing.

For professional sports, that's tennis, golf, bowling.
