NY Times: Meaningless Bowl games trump many first-round NCAA Tournament TV Ratings
Even the lowly Camelia Bowl drew 1 million viewers:

Not sure it's an accurate comparison.

Add the total viewers for the first round and then check against the minor bowls. Better yet, the Sweet 16 is a better comparison of rating against the minor bowls.

These are such stupid comparisons. The bowls usually have no competition or very little and occur when a lot of people are off work. How many 1st round games are on at one time? 3, 4 or 5? A lot of them occur during the middle of the work day.

When did we stop teaching critical thinking skills?

A better question might be if anyone has ever taught it.

One reason why I don't think Bowls are going anywhere or the CFP will expand any time soon.

For reference I put together these numbers a few years ago. This is from the 2012-13 season where I had the full ratings for all games. Here is how the NCAA tournament stacked up

Code:
Round    Games    Viewers    average    By weekend
First Four    4    4,400,000    1,100,000    4,400,000
1st round    32    65,360,000    2,042,500    -
2nd round    16    81,200,000    5,075,000    146,560,000
sweet 16    8    47,100,000    5,887,500    -
Elite Eight    4    43,900,000    10,975,000    91,000,000
Final Four     2    31,600,000    15,800,000    -
National Championship    1    23,400,000    23,400,000    55,000,000

In total the NCAA tournament drew 297 million viewers over all 67 games that year. That same year the entire football bowl season drew 193 million fans. Ratings for both are up this year over 2013, so we shall see how it holds up. But there wasn't a big enough jump in the CFP viewership, to make up 100 million viewers.

This is not good news for the small conference schools that get automatic bids. Sort of defeats the argument that people watch the basketball tournament games because of the cinderella type teams.

The next CFP would do very well to pull completely out of the bowls, let traditional bowl tie-ins rule the day as the "first round" and then rank the top four for a playoff at independent sites. A "Plus 4", if you will.

If I were in control, I'd convert the current CFP to this as well. Just have a "Plus 2" championship game, though. And give the Orange Bowl the first pick of At-large teams so as to fairly pair up the ACC champion with someone at that caliber from the remaining P5 leagues.

The number for the Sweet 16 games. As suspected, way above many bowls.
CBS games:
ND vs Wichita 1.9 6.96 million viewers
WV vs Kent 2.7 8.04 million viewers

TBS games:
NC vs Wisc 2.3 6.8 million viewers
AZ vs Xav 1.8 4.6 million viewers

Sweet 16 games are a more accurate comparison since there are about the same amount of games at one time. Basketball holds its own.

Edit: http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/-Thur...98341.html
just found another article. Best overnight ratings for the NCAA in 25 years.

What? The Super Bowl gets better ratings than an IUPUI vs. UMKC basketball game in November?

That's proof football is more popular.
