BlazerGold's description of Quadree Smith reminds this old timer of Charles Barkley at the same age. Charles was described by the phrase "The Round Mound of Rebound" and worked out well for AU and then in the NBA.

He is very similar to Cinmeon Bowers at Auburn.

RE: Spring signing period
Smith has a pot belly and moobs. He makes the high school Barkley look like a supermodel. He needs a solid dose of big boy training and conditioning and to be fed right. That said, he's just the kind of widebody we need. He's got game, can find his shot and has touch around the paint. He just needs to muscle up and quit the fast food joints.

He'd be a good fit and I'd love for us to sign him. Playing with the guys for a bit would convert some fat to muscle.

Hope he shoots free throws better.

I think we would rather move brown to the 3. Dirk seems like a pure shooter, with size.

The "3" doesn't really exist in our offense.

We play Three Guards + Two Forwards

or rather

We play One Point + Two Guards + Two Forwards.

Everyone neatly fits into those categories, with the exception of Madison who is an undersized forward.

Or oversized guard.

At first glance when watching Quadree Smith, I thought, No Way Coach Haase is going to be after this guy. But Smith runs better than expected. Has better lift than expected. Coach Schlesinger could take 40 pounds off of him and we would have the big man we desperately need. Smith has a decent looking jumper, and is adequate with either hand on the hook shot. But what sells me on him is his passing. He threw a pea down the court for an outlet. He threw over the top of a double team and hit his shooter in the hands on the opposite wing. He reminds me of a young Oliver Miller.

He's a big ole guy but it looks like he has great hands and can pass. Not sure with his height if he can really get up there against college bigs, but it might be someone we want to look at.

That is kind of where I'm going with the 40 pounds comment. Take 40 off and his vertical will double to 24 inches. Get him in the weight room for a year too and he could be unstoppable. He already has all the playground moves to score with no vertical leap. If Coach Schlesinger can get him down to 250 or so, watch out.

Q Smith reminds me of a shorter Josh Smith (Georgetown)... Josh is 6'10" 250 and is explosive under the basket. Q is 6'8" 250 and could use some help with his vertical... Tosin & HaHa would be all over his shots, but his wide body may give him some extra spacing.

Someone is going to get a very good point guard in Malik Cook from Homewood. He reminds me of Aaron Johnson and Fred Van Vleet at Wichita State. He is so strong with the ball and makes everyone around him much better. He very unselfish and is a winner. I'm not sure who is recruiting Cook, but someone is going to get one of best players in the state. I'd rate him better than Coleman at Alabama as he has never had as much talent around him. UAB needs to take notice.

Hadn't heard of him until now. Thanks for the info. He looks good!

We have the depth to bring him in and then give him a year to get into game shape. I've said all along that this would be a good class to bring in a project with lots of upside.

@BFlinnHoops: UAB will be in to see New Hope (MS) 2015 G Shemar Johnson and 2017 G Terryonte Thomas, per a source.

This was going into his senior year. http://www.wcbi.com/wordpress/new-hopes-...andy-dozen
Johnson, a 6’6 guard for the Trojans, led New Hope last year with 14.5 points per game and 7 rebounds per game. He’s currently fielding interest from Mississippi State, Murray State and Southern Illinois on the recruiting circuit.

Danta' Hall is going to wait to see if any of the assistants are retained at Bama. Is it common for assistants to work with the new coach? I'd bet he opens up his recruitment if Pettway is gone.

Except when he is the primary recruiter. But at some point they want to move into actual coaching. He may move on because of that and because he could be a hot commodity...

This is probably the case because the assistants are not known to the new HC. Besides, the new coach usually has a staff of people he knows well and brings in with him. As with Clark, he may keep one assistant for the sake of continuity (ie recruiting).
