I grew up listening to Waylon and Willie from my papa. I'm a HUGE Dolly fan. Real country music has that thin reedy sound to it because they were from the actual country. Not this slicked up pop crap that they play now.
That being said I FAR prefer bluegrass to country music nowadays. I'm headed to Nashville in a month and hopefully some of the joints on Broadway will still have some good music going.
I also prefer bluegrass, but I wouldn't say that ALL current country music blows. Of course nobody sounds like Waylon, Hank Jr, Merle, etc. It was a different time.
I will say that a LOT of current country sucks. Florida-Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Brantley Gilbert, etc are all atrociously bad. A lot of it can't be differentiated from pop music.
However, there ARE some artists that still make great music. The Zac Brown Band is one of the most talented, wide-ranging bands I've ever heard. They write & play great country music, but also pay homage to other genres. I went to a ZBB concert in Charleston, which was amazing.. and in addition to their songs, they covered "Can't You See" (Marshall Tucker Band), Piano Man (Billy Joel), Kashmir (Led Zepplin), The Devil Went Down To Georgia (Charlie Daniels), and Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen).
Most of Eric Church's stuff is good, Dierks Bentley is fantastic (please listen to more than "Drunk on a Plane"), some of Jon Pardi's stuff is great.
