If he went out of bounds, he was forced out, which would have been 2 foul shots.

Also, their coach signaled for traveling, but not that Freeman stepped out.

He was definitely not out of bounds. He may or may not have traveled, but it wasn't clear either way.

Those officials did not miss very much that we did. If he traveled, the ref may have thought, he aint gonna make that lets get to over time. Well guess what?

I was at that game. When I read this tread that game immediately came to mind. Up until last night that game was the best I had ever seen ODU.After last night's game the Villanova game drops to number 2. It does not get any better than last night. See you in NYC!!!!!!!!!!!

Great game by Trey, but Petey's 35 points against Villanova in the first round of the 95 NCAAT was the best ODU performance.

Allow me to frame the picture for you. Petey got fouled in the corner on a three point attempt when we were down three with just seconds to go in the game. He went to the line and hit all three foul shots. Then at the end of the third overtime, he blocked a shot (nearly pinned it on the backboard) and hustled down the court to receive a pass from Dunlap for a breakaway layup and an "and 1" to seal the victory. To block a shot at the basket and be the lead guy on a fast break is almost impossible. This was on St. Patrick's Day, a Friday night, and 98% of the country were receiving the end of the game since the other games already ended and the second games of the night had not started yet.

yea i was there an amazing performance and the best thing is 20 years later we are still talking about Petey and that Villanova is still feeling the effects of that loss......20 years from now we will be talking about the shot Trey hit to send the monarchs to MSG....there will be many more in between like Billy Mann's shot heard around the world was awesome too and that was 34 years ago

I was at the game also and have to vote for Petey as best performance, for all the reasons you mentioned. I still go back and watch it now and then. Trey's shot was dramatic and clutch, but to keep us going to three overtimes to finally overcome a more talented team in the Big Dance was tremendous.

Can someone officially measure how long the shot was? I have seen reporerters saying everything from 25 to 45 feet. I am guessing it was about 30 to 35.

Last night they were saying on TV the NIT logo is 8 feet behind the three point line.

The game last night certainly ranks among the best and there have been some great finishes. One big finish was Odell Hodge senior season in the CAA championship. I believe EJ Sherod hit three FT's with time expired in regulation to send the game to OT. We won in OT.

Billy Mann's steal and layup to beat then # 1 ranked Depaul in 1981, game was at
DePaul. I remember the late great Al McGuire bragging about ODU for about a week after that game.

Thanks for the correction. I guess the story gets better as times passes.

RE: Freeman - Best Single Game Performance in ODU History?
Thinking back I was thinking there must have been better performances in our entire history. Then I get this vision of Trey Freeman hobbling so bad on Monday that you knew he was toast for the season. Then suddenly, like a bolt from heaven came down and strikes his ankle, he comes out on Wednesday on fire and taking the ball right at Murray state . He came to play and play he did all the way to the dagger three with 1 second on the clock.

Many were saying don't play Trey, he's too hurt. For Trey Freeman to do what he did Wednesday night was miraculous ! The greatest gut check comeback performance in Monarch History. The others mentioned have been great too and I remember them all. Freeman's falls into a category by itself, IMO. Just amazing, I still can't get over it.

Brian is engaged to a friend of my sister. I tried my best not to go all "fan-girl" when we saw them at the Watermelon Festival in Carytown last summer. My sis, a UVa. grad, was like, "I think she said he played basketball somewhere."
