Yup, Ohio State basketball is a joke south of Columbus. Very different than football. Most Ohio state fans don't give a hoot about basketball.

In the cradle of champions, Ohio state just doesn't measure up, for once. Football will always be king in Columbus.

Its not that hard to believe

We all know its walmart/tshirt/nonalum fans which make a school the most popular in the state, and without a doubt Tech is the most popular team in the state....for football, their fans stop paying attention after December, even during their competitive years on the bubble.

One would think UVA would be the most popular basketball team, but they're only just now getting back to the heights they reached under Terry Holland, with quite a few bad years in between.

VCU with its final four run plus maintaining relevancy the following years after (unlike GMU) that run plus being located in the 44th largest metro that has no major pro team has made them the basketball team of the commonwealth.

I agree. VCU is ridiculously popular in Richmond. The fact that UR went to the elite 8 the same year, has been completely overshadowed by VCU's final four.

VCU also has the largest enrollment in Virginia and probably the largest Alumni base although they aren't used to donating to their athletics programs like the ACC schools.

I have a friend who lives in the fan district, that is a Kentucky graduate, decorates his house with UK stuff and watches every Kentucky game. He donates to VCU so he can buy season tickets for the basketball games. The Siegel center is electric during games and they have one of the best bands in the state too. Thanks to their Music school.

Hopefully the NYTimes comes out with the zip code version of this before the season is over.

You could do the same map for FB and it would not change very much.

There's no way that Duke is more popular than UNC in NC.

Or today from Boston Globe sports writer Eric Wilbur

But in times like the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, which this year boasts three local schools — Providence, Northeastern, and Harvard — even non-alums do tend to gravitate toward the local entrant. As long as it’s not Boston College.

As I said...haters gonna hate. "As long as its not Boston College". Yeah, those sound like the comments of an objective sports columnist. Yeah, that's the ticket. Is it possible for people to "hate" schools they think are irrelevant? Sounds like an oxymoron to me; but that's just me.

This columnist, though, is a perfect reflection off what I am talking about. Local guy. Grew up a fan of another local school and hating BC. BC has had far more sports success across the board than any other Boston area school. Of course this produces haters. Why wouldn't it?

Look, if you want to rip on BC BB. Have had it. They have made some disastrous mistakes with that program and they are down now. Funny, though, how you never mentioned FB - the one true sport that matters in realignment. We don't want to be comparing BC and Uamss in that sport now, do we? Want to talk about attendance? How about comparing the attendance between BC and Umass at their Labor Day FB game this past season, at Gillette (Umass' "home" stadium.). I was at that game. You guys were embarrassed - both in fan numbers and performance on the field - compared to BC

How about we talk hockey comparisons? Don't think so.

But, hey. Have at it with BB. It's the only sport that Umass compares favorably to BC (slightly) - for now. Haters gonna hate.

I guess the Boston Globe and the BC blog are BC haters.

Not surprising considering Creighton's success over the last 15 years and the fact that Nebraska has never won an NCAA game ever.

Dayton may own its own city more than any other school in the country. They are one of the few that still has a local television deal that preempts primetime CBS shows (on the number 1 CBS affiliate in the country in terms of ratings share) to show Dayton games.

My family is originally from Dayton, and its unbelievable how many people are fans of OSU football and then Dayton/UC basketball.

Dayton has a very strong passion for basketball. And Flyer basketball is at the top.

Um, reading comprehension problem?

Yes, I responded to your link where, IMO, the "haters gonna hate" tag is appropriate. Wouldn't you agree?

Again, I wasn't referring to the Globe. I was referring to the writer. Guess what, the views of the writers and columnists don't necessarily reflect the views of the media outlet they work for.

I didn't respond to the BC blog article you linked because I didn't necessarily disagree with what it said. Yes, BC BB is down now, and this has resulted in fan apathy. I only referred to the other article as exemplifying my point.

Got it now?

I do find it amusing to read the smug comments from Umass and Uconn fans about BC BB. Both fans of schools with horribly bad football teams (the one sport that matters in realignment). Both football programs far worse in FB than BC is in BB.

For Nebraska its correct that Creighton is ahead of Nebraska. Omaha is a Nebraska football town and Creighton basketball town. Bluejays sell out about every night and Omaha is a decent sized metro, which is basically all of the population of Nebraska.

Surprises:
NJ - I would have thought that 'Nova or Syracuse would have beaten out the Hall.

PA - I can see Villanova, but I would have thought that Pitt would have a bigger following, given Pitt is a bigger name (admittedly thanks to football) and 'Nova's proximity to NJ (I imagine many 'Nova fans had votes that counted in NJ).

Delaware - I would have thought that UMD would have carried this state.

Virginia - I am surprised UVA lost to VCU.

Mass - I am amazed that harvard beat BC.

Vermont and New Hampshire - I am amazed that either Syracuse or UConn didn't carry these states.

Rhode Island - I can see Prov., but I would imagine that UConn is in the running.

Washington - I can't believe that Udub lost to the Zags.

Alaska - Come on! There *has* to be at least one basketball fan in the state.

Iowa - I am surprised that Iowa lost this battle. I think of Iowa having a better tradition and more fans in general.

North Carolina - I am amazed that UNC lost this battle. I think of UNC having a bigger fan base AND a more NC-centric fan base.

Tennessee - I am surprised that the Vols didn't carry the state. I bet when football picks up again, Vandy and Memphis will lose fans to the Vols, and that will translate into more basketball fans. Cheering for UTk football and Vandy/Memphis basketball would be awkward.

South Carolina - USCarolina has more fans (in general) and a stronger history in basketball, so I'm surprised that Clemson has more fans. It might be the ACC affiliation (i.e. it's easy to get excited when Duke and UNC come to town)

DC - It amazes me that *anyone* could like the Hoyas...ever.

For football, UT hands down.

But for basketball, there isn't the passion for UT men like Memphis has in the western part of the state. When I lived in Nashville, I heard a lot more Memphis basketball talk than I did UT men's basketball talk. UT had a brief spike under Slime Pearl, but it was short-lived.

Iowa State had more buzz about it this year which means more chatter in those public sites that were part of this. Iowa still has more fans and brings in a lot more money than Iowa State. This was just a very good year for Iowa State.

It's such a shame when people can't recognize that the measures used as a substitute for real research are faulty. This would not pass a graduate committee, let alone a doctoral committee.
