And what will go on with the staff right now? Are they going to continue to recruit, or what. It's possible a new coach could retain Joe if he wanted to stay. That's assuming Joe isn't the new coach.04-cheers

We may keep Joe just because we can't afford someone else.

And as pointed out, he might well be a candidate for the head job. In my opinion a pretty strong candidate, but that's without knowing the competition, or whether he is even a candidate for the position.

I really don't see it, unless money is the primary concern. Just don't see how you hire an assistant from a staff you just decided was not getting the job done. I do hope he stays around.

I really like Joe, and wouldn't be upset if he took the job. However, I really believe in this case, we need a completely new start, and should bring in someone with no previous connections to UALR. Like Mark Downey, if he would take the job!

Well, wasn't Daniyal Robinson an assistant coach under Shields? Does that disqualify him in your opinion?

Unfortunately yes. But my vote doesn't count. I want someone who has a proven record as a head coach. And I don't really care where he has coached. It could be D2, or whatever. Joe Foley is the poster boy for hiring a winning coach.
Mark Downey could possibly be the same. That's my number one man. Some of us were talking about him years ago when he was winning big at Arkansas Tech. Now is possibly our chance to land the man. Who knows. Maybe we already have!

I'd have to think about that- Daniyal, Wes Flanigan, Joe Kleine, and Joe Harge all coached under Steve. I think they could all be good coaches here. Whether we would hire someone who mentored under Steve is an interesting question.

I'd rather they all prove themselves somewhere else as a head coach. Not here. Not now. We can't take a chance on an unknown quantity. If they take a D2 job somewhere, and do terrific as a head coach, then maybe they would be acceptable to me, but as it now stands, I want a proven head coach. And someone who can command the respect of the local media. And someone who plays a different style of basketball than Steve coached. That would be important.

Joe Harge coached the Rimrockers to a 32-5 record and was the head coach at DII New Mexico Highlands for 6 years. He resigned last year after 6 seasons due to an AD change and lack of financial resources. His first team went 20-7, after going 1-25 the year before he came in.

He might be a possibility. I remember him as a nice man. What occurred after the 20-7 season?

Joe Harge is an outstanding coach.

The house will be cleaned just as many of you have said they need to do.

May well be the best approach. New AD. New day in UALR athletics. Chasse needs someone who can help him market the program now. Wins will have to come later.

Later like at the start of the new season or you are just marketing a same ole ****, loser program.

There is enough here to win.

More often than not when a new coach comes in it takes a season or two, at least, to get things situated the way he wants it, recruiting the players he wants, etc. You say the talent is here already but I'm not so sure. This is a lot of the same bunch that has been sub .500 for three out of the last four seasons. Maybe they will be better under the new coach, but maybe Shields was getting the most out of them that they have, and recruiting was the problem We really won't know until next season.

But, a new coach can put fresh energy right away into a program that had gotten pretty stale. I expect to see a lot more of the fresh ideas that Chasse has brought to the program, and a new coach will help promote the idea that it is a brand new day out on University Avenue!
