Question for Georgia State fans
Quick question for Panther basketball fans regarding Ron Hunter: how loyal do you think he is towards GSU? I ask because Miami's coach is on the hot seat entering next season, and if he bombs next year he's out on the street. Harper might just be my number one choice for a new head coach if that's the case (not that my opinion makes much of a difference), and I'm just curious what you guys think of him.

FYI he's a Miami alum from nearby Dayton, and going from the Belt to the MAC would push him up to a conference with an overall RPI of ten versus twenty. I imagine those would be the only major reasons that would make us attractive to him at this point since our program is in shambles. That, and with his son either going to the NBA this year or graduating in 2016 you wouldn't think that he'd be tied to GSU anymore by personal reasons.

RE: Question for Georgia State fans
I don't think that CRH will choose to make a lateral move to a non-P-5 conference. He has built something special at Georgia State and I don't believe he would leave for Miami. I do think he would leave if a P-5 conference school came calling.

Yeah, I agree. If a respected P-5 school comes calling, he could leave. But, he had many job offers at IUPUI and was there for 17 years.

RE: Question for Georgia State fans
I think it would have to be a Power 5 urban school. He is on record as not knowing what to do on a traditional campus. Also he spent 17 years at IUPUI. I dont think he is going to just ship just to jump.

I might not be remembering correctly but I thought I recalled the story on Hunter was that he wasn't getting serious offers at IUPUI which is why he moved on to Georgia State.

I think the more important question here is this:

Do you have more pictures of the girls in your signature?

RE: Question for Georgia State fans
One reason Hunter decided to leave IUPUI was because it was a one-bid league; he liked the idea of the CAA (back all those years ago) having seasons with more than just the tourney champ going to the NCAA. I have no idea how attached he is to GSU, I want to believe he likes his situation (he came to GSU before he knew his son wanted to play for him), but I suspect he'll only consider leaving for a P5 program not a lateral move to a one bid conference, G5 or any other.

Just my guess, hope, prayer that he stays.

Yep, not remembering correctly.

I can accept that, but I'd love to hear some examples of what jobs he turned down while at IUPUI.
I'm pretty sure I was told by someone who was part of the process when he was hired that he was frustrated that, despite all his success, he wasn't getting any attention for higher-level jobs. He decided that moving to the CAA and the Atlanta market would help him get noticed.

RE: Question for Georgia State fans
Can you pay him more $ and is it as easy or easier to get recruits to your campus than it is to get them to Atlanta? Those are the only issues.

I personally heard him say on a radio show that he had job offers throughout the years. He chose GSU because it was an urban university in a large city just like IUPUI. He stated he knows what it takes to succeed in major cities.

There might be a lucrative opening across Centennial Park just past the Coca-Cola Museum.

They cant hire another mid major coach. They have to open the checkbook. They have a half empty $45M arena.

I don't think anyone is too hot to trot on him yet. I believe there is a little skepticism about how he will do without RJ. After all in 21 seasons, he has made the dance once in '03.

The fact he played for Miami is an interesting angle, but who knows?

That is funny after what he did in 2011-12 here. But whatever. Works to our advantage. Personally I dont think he has a great desire to move anywhere especially with Levick's exit and Cobb's entrance. He realizes he has just scratched the surface of what can be built here. I found his quote after the game last Saturday interesting.

Quote:“It’s difficult to do this at the mid-major level,” a teary Georgia State coach Ron Hunter said. “I know walking through campus the importance of winning. Turner Field, all the things we are trying to do, this win is important for all those things.”

It capsulizes what we keep hearing him say in interviews in print and on the radio. He doesn't sound like someone who is looking to leave. If Levick were still around today it would all be academic. CRH, RJ and host of other folks would be running for the exit. I think now he is comfortable and with the prospect of the basketball practice facility I think he feels like he can build something here.

every coach loves where he is, and loves what the program and university is doing. lol.

you never know what underlying desires/coaching goals he has.

He may love what Ga State is doing, but maybe ever since he played at Miami, he has always wanted a shot to go back and coach. Of course he will never make that public. And that might not be the case, but nobody except for him and his wife knows.
