A single strong recruiting class can tremendously elevate a program. As poor as the 2014-2015 team played, it's not like the cupboard is completely bare for the next coach. We can expect some player movements/transfers with the new coach hire.

Honestly it is pretty bare. But quick fixes happen in hoops. Hopefully one is on the horizon for us.

Yes, hoops can make a quick turn around. In two seasons we can easily become a 20 game winner..... given the right pieces.

We seem better at the present at guard and forward. Our bigs are the weaker link. The bigs lumber when they plan and most times are overshadowed by smaller, more athletic players.

Chris Lang HC tweet mention
When it was posted that Chris Lang was asked, and responded that 2 names from his top 25 had contacted LU for the basketball HC job, but he would not reveal them, that got me wondering. How would Chris know this? Did some LU insider give him the lead? Or, which is harder to fathom, did these two interested parties contact Chris and ask his opinion about the program directly or indirectly? How does Chris know this?

One could think that someone at LU is excited to have received inquiries from high level schools and wanted Chris to know and is deliberate on LU's part. Or, is Chris, as a reputable and respected Flames beat writer, being feed info to tweet out to build interest in the opening. This info did not come the Flames but from Chris's tweet.

If we hire a high level assistant we can assume it's likely true. If we don't there may be a thought that Chris may have been parlayed on this one. Maybe we'll find out after the selection. Lang seems to be a stand up guy.

I posted this earlier in the season, but I think it's worth repeating. I'm not sure one Liberty player would have seen significant minutes on one of the top 3 or 4 big south programs. Thats a telling sign.

Chris wouldn't share unless his facts are legit. I don't think anyone in the Athletic Department would be shy about leaking that vague information. I have no reason to think otherwise. And I am sure that agents of coaches across America are inquiring right now if for no other reason to show their value to their clients.

I believe Chris has had the inquiries. Your thought that it's agents of coaches seems likely to build up their clients. Still, Top 25? That is what baffles me. It just doesn't add up. Top 100 HC or highly acclaimed assistant could still be a great hire.

We are a very attractive move for a High Major assistant. If you turnaround our mess then you are looking at high major openings for your next gig.

RE: Will the new Liberty basketball coach influence the FBS quest?
Read a few days ago that former Flame basketball player, Ryan Mantlo, a JUCO coach, is on the LU list for consideration for the next head coach. I had the opportunity to meet Ryan when he played at LU. He is a very nice fellow and a good person. It is always good when a former player wants to come back and be a part of the team he played for. That is a nice compliment for the university.

After Ryan has continued to build a resume and gains more experience, he'll hopefully become better qualified. Let's wish him well and hope that he continues to excel in his coaching career. Unfortunately, the timing now is not the right time. But who knows, it could be in the future.

Here's the article: http://www.wwaytv3.com/2015/03/12/cfcc-c...iberty-job

Zero chance for Ryan to land this job right now. I'm not saying it couldn't happen down the road. But right now, we are looking for someone whose brand and resume are a bit more impressive.

Yep. He has got to pay his dues a little more and become a recognized winner.

As we enter the tourney, coaches are resigning and being let go. Oliver Purnell, just resigned from DePaul. Former coach of Radford and ODU. He meets the previous stated HC experience. At 61, that likely works against him. Does he have an interest in returning to VA and is LU interested in him?

I think I would rather go for a fresh coach instead of what feels like a retread. I want someone on his career upswing rather than downward spiral. I don't know much if anything about Oliver Purnell to determine if he fits that description but judging by where is has been I think his career isn't going up.

From what I heard Purnell was discussed a while ago; pretty sure it was a resounding "no thanks"

I was shocked Alabama fired Anthony Grant. He's been fairly successful there. AL is a tough place to win and Grant has taken them to the tourney a few times. There could be some internal issues between the ad and Grant, but who knows. I don't think he would consider Liberty, but it would be worth a call. Grant fits the Liberty profile perfectly.

I saw that as well and was surprised. Sign me up for him if he checks out as being a "Liberty guy."
