The New York City school closing calendar will add two holidays to celebrate Muslim events.

Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed via Twitter that the largest school district in the country will add Eid al-Adha and al-Fitr to the school holiday schedule.

The mayor said it "respects the diversity of our city."

"We're here today to make good on a promise to our Muslim brothers and sisters that a holiday of supreme importance to the Muslim community will be recognized in our school calendar so that children can honor the holiday without missing school, so that families can be together on the holiday, so that our city respects and embraces this important and growing community," de Blasio said at an event Wednesday. "We're making good on a promise, and it's time for this promise to be kept."

In the coming 2015-2016 school year, schools will close on September 24 for Eid al-Adha. The event, also called the Feast of the Sacrifice, celebrates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael.

As part of the event, meat from a sacrificed animal is divided into three parts. The family retains one third. Another third is given to relatives or neighbors. The final is given to the poor and needy.

Eid al-Fitr, which falls over the summer, will be designated a holiday for those attending summer school.

That event, also called Feast of Breaking the Fast, is also considered an important religious holiday for Muslims. It marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said each school year will be adjusted to take into account when all recognized holidays fall to make sure the mandated minimum of 180 days of classroom time is met. She said the schedule always builds in a few extra days in anticipation of snow days.

If you think "Holiday Break" has nothing to do with Xmas then I've got some excellent property in Less Cruces to sell you. 03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

Well, if that's the case, I fully expect the PC police to soon be prohibiting the use of "holiday".

Of course we would. Most people love Christmas.

Kids call it "Winter Break" around here now. Of course, I corrected my daughter when she sprang that one on me.

It is Winter Break. What's wrong with that definition?

It was called "Christmas Break" my entire childhood and, up until two years ago, at my kid's school.

"Perdonen a Fit, es de Mejico." There, fixed. Do I have to do this in Spanish too. I already do it for EFL speakers here. 03-wink
