USF basketball coaching canidates...lots of old BE names
Steve Lappas, Mike Jarvis and Pete Gillen all are looking at the USF job...the return of 90s BE coaches

TAMPA - George "Tic" Price, one of three finalists for the University of South Florida men's basketball job in 1996, is trying again to become the Bulls' coach.

Price was one of six candidates to officially apply in the past two days. USF athletic director Doug Woolard said he will not comment on candidates to replace Robert McCullum.

In 1996 Price, then coach at the University of New Orleans, was a finalist to replace Bobby Paschal at USF along with Long Beach State's Seth Greenberg and Miami of Ohio's Herb Sendek.

Greenberg was hired by USF and Price remained at UNO until 1997, when he was hired at Memphis. He remained at Memphis for two seasons until resigning a week before the 1999-2000 season after an affair with a 23-year-old student.

In 2001, Price became coach at McNeese State for five seasons until he was fired in 2006. He spent the last year as a TV analyst for UNO basketball.

Other candidates to officially apply are former Kansas State coach Jim Wooldridge and Mike Brown, a 12-year NBA veteran who coached in the NBA Developmental League, along with a junior high boys coach in Columbus, Ohio; a Boys and Girls Club director in Atlantic City, N.J.; and a USF student, who coaches a middle-school girls team.

Former Villanova coach Steve Lappas, an analyst for CSTV, said Sunday he was interested in the position while former coaches/TV analysts Pete Gillen, Cliff Ellis and Mike Jarvis also are pursuing the position.

Beware USF, that sounds like a lot of retread candidates and I say at least most are not the right man for the job.

Mike Jarvis? No thanks, USF doesn't need probation in a few years.

Tic Price? Uhh, ask Memphis fans what they think of him.

IF I were USF I would go in the following order:

1. Bobby Lutz
2. Travis Ford
3. John Phelphery

All others are retreads. Of the retreads the only one I would be somewhat interested in is Steve Lappas since he knows the Big East.

I'd like to see Jarvis return. He's got a good profile and thats what USF needs as much as a basketball coach.

Bobby Lutz is a very interesting name. I think he might be ready to bail on UNCC. He could be a Seth Greenberg/VTech type of coach for USF.

Did you see his work at Saint John's? JMO what USF needs is a good coach and recruiter and again JMO Bobby Lutz would feel that bill.

USF should run from these guys. There's a good reason that they are all ex BE coaches. ;-)

We all need someone to hate in the BE. God UCONN fans just "love" this guy and we gave him the nickname "Satan".

hire Johnny Jones from UNT before you hire Tic Price...if not, you need to buy chastity belts for all women on-campus.

L-Yes, I think UNCC may be ready to bail on Lutz, not the other way around.

Wasn't this his first down year?

I don't care for any of the names on the list in the article. I refer back to the list of mostly younger upcoming coaches I posted on another thread.

Sean Miller isn't a retread. I would expect him to be the front runner if to return to his alma mater if Jamie Dixon ever leaves.

I don't think Tic would be a good hire. He is more the kind of guy who can run a program into the ground, not build one up.

Tic probably just wants the job because there are hot chicks all over Florida.

Dont think Tic or jarvis have much of a shot.
I think our AD will go with some younger coach from a smaller league.
There was mention on one of our boards that Karl Hobbs from GW might be interested

And really, what more could be accomplished at USF that hasn't already been done?

Don 't like that list, the dude is a nutt but former UT coach and now NBA assistant Kevin O'Neil might be what the program needs, the guy could land some serious talent.
