Two big weeks for Basketball AND Baseball coming up
While the focus is of course on UNCW Basketball winning the conference tournament in 2 weeks, UNCW Baseball (6-0) has a huge couple of weeks coming up.

First up is a trip to Tallahassee this weekend (Feb 27-Mar 1), to face the 22nd-ranked Seminoles (4-3), who draw about 5,000 fans per game. The following weekend (Mar 6-8) we host a former ACC opponent for FSU, the 20th-ranked Maryland Terrapins (5-1), now affiliated with the Big 10.

The last time we had a pair of 3-game series against power conference baseball teams was 2012, when we hit the road for series against Ole Miss and TCU. While all 6 games were close, we only managed to win 1 of the 6, against the Horned Frogs.

The fact that BOTH teams are currently ranked is a big deal. If we can find a way to win 4 or more of these games, we automatically enter Regional host discussions.

FSU faces Jacksonville tonight before meeting us for 3 games. Maryland, meanwhile, has a 3-game series against Appalachian St followed by a midweek game against Delaware before facing us. In between these two series we host NC Central on March 4th.

We've beaten a #1 recently, I'm not scared. We have a tough team that I believe can do some real damage.

Is this our best start ever in baseball? It seems like the first time we actually won the Hughes brothers challenge but i am probably wrong on that one

We started 9-0 in 2009. We swept a 3-game series over Maryland and 4-game series over Michigan St to start that season, along with wins over Charleston and Wake Forest.

I don't believe there was a Hughes Bros. Challenge that season; I can't remember why. We invited Kent St and Wright St to play 4 games apiece the second weekend in March, and ended up losing the first game of that "tournament" to Kent St, 5-2, to end our streak.

We ended up going 31-23 that year.
