Wonder if the withdraw preceded or post that most idiotic statement by the Faculty Senate Pres, Hoblet? How stupid do you have to be to say something like that to the press while the selection process is ongoing?

If it's anything like head coaches looking at a job and then being informed they're not going to get it, they usually tell them ahead of the announcement so that they can withdraw and therefore not look so bad to their current school/team.

Disappointed to see Dr. Howard withdraw from the position. UT needs to announce who the next president will be ASAP, if not it looks like we are choosing our second pick because the first one was no longer interested in our university. Even if this was not the case...

Once again the UT board of directors puts the university in a very awkward and embarrassing situation, why am I not surprised?

If the Faculty Senate President's statement triggered the exact result he/she wanted, then, devious and unfair it may have been, but stupid? Far from it. University politics can be particularly vicious at times.

"Politics" are kept internal and they aren't supposed to make your entire Faculty, those represented by the Senate Pres, look like buffoons.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I just go to football games but...

All the Pres/Blade had to do was keep the pie-holes shut for a few days. Does anyone think the other two candidates are so desperate for a position with a lowered tiered university that they need to walk into the environment indicated by that one public comment? Does the Faculty Senate really think the new President, who let's be real, sees UT as a stepping stone, wants to look like they were picked because they are weak and need to curry favor with the Faculty union?

Cooperative is one thing. Owned is another. Neither of the remaining candidates wants to look like someone's pony.

Morons.

RE: Open Forum - Presidential Search
I don't think it is unheard of for a candidate to withdraw after final interviews and before decision if they've found another position or determined, that isn't where they want to be. It would be the wiser thing to do, rather than get selected then decline. In this case, the timing is a concern after the public comment made (not by a BOT member) by a Faculty Senate Pres., particularly when negotiations are present.

It makes either of the two remaining look owned by the faculty union, lacking objectivity and the best operating interests of the University. It makes the Faculty look like children who will throw their pudding if they don't get what they want, regardless the impact on everyone else at the table.

What respectable candidate would not then have to take a harder line so as to not looked owned? UT is a stepping stone for any outside candidate, end of story. Faculty shouldn't go acting like they run the show when their student population is falling, their research dollars are not keeping up and you cannot even get some of the magazines to even rate you. When you are lucky enough to get candidates of this quality to come visiting, you make sure it is clear that your biggest interest is the health of the university and from that, salaries will grow and no other way, even if it takes a step back to make two steps forward.

If politics was at play here, then it was to scare away all candidates to instill the interim.

All I want is a good president. We haven't had one since 1972. More that forty years with an endless parade of very average to completely incompetent leaders. It's a wonder that UT has even survived.

I still have hope.

Dr Howard would have been a fine president for UT. My wife went to high school with him.

He's a good cat - smart and charismatic.

The faculty senate was Vic Kapoor's worst enemy. They didn't want to adhere to his higher standards he was proposing.

Dr. James McComas in the mid and late 80s was a great president, IMO.

OK. I did like him too. To bad he left so quickly, and then died.
I was thinking more about the alcoholics, the one who divorced his wife and then married his secretary, the ones who got fired, the incompetent and other sordid situations.
